Meet the Mets

Meet the Mets

In 1972 when I first started watching the Mets, the starting lineup would feature Kranepool, Dyer, Marshall, Teddy Martinez, and Dave Schneck.  I didn't realize that half the team was injured.  I'm sure some kid is going through the same experience now.

Good One

I feel exactly like the guy with the newspaper. I started watching the Mets in about 1976 and I can't remember a time when the Mets have been so decimated by injuries to key players.

'87?

About the only comparison I could make is to 1987, when, I think, all the starting pitchers were disabled at one point or another, and, of course, Gooden kicked the ball before Opening Day with his drug addiction.

Like most of the Mets at that

Like most of the Mets at that time I have little recollection of the year after they won the World Series. But '88? Yes I remember that well. What's tough about this situation is the fact that we're missing a combination of starting pitchers and our best position players. I think this team would get a lot better if we just got Reyes and Beltran back in the lineup.

recollections

My biggest recollection of '87 was being in college in Vermont in 1986 and buying all the papers (NYC & Boston) the day after the Series ended (I still have them) and seeing either the Times or Daily News already dumping on the '87 Mets saying how for this and that reason they couldn't succeed, be as good, needed to fix this and that hole.  Jeez, wait until the tickertape is swept up, would you?

As for this year, there would be a huge improvement by getting Reyes and Beltrán back if they could be Reyes and Beltrán, not some pod people version playing at 67% afraid of hurting themselves again.

Glass half full

I know it's hard to keep hope alive when the team is playing poorly and making errors like it's a bodily function. But the Mets are only 1 game out! They showed great resiliency today and are facing a struggling Phillies team. Look at the pitching matchups for the Mets-Phillies series! Livan v.s. Rodrigo Lopez (who?) Nieve v.s. Moyer and Johan v.s. Joe BLANTON! The Mets have the better starting pitching and bullpen. As far as hitting it's night and day but if the starters go deep and keep us in the game there is no reason why the mets can't win 2 of 3. Plus Ibanez isnt going to be back and Beltran doesn't need surgery. I like the Mets chances of making the playoffs if they can stay in the hunt. This is hopefully what their lineup will look like in early-late august: 1.Reyes 2. Castillo 3. Beltran 4. Delgado 5. Wright 6. Sheffield 7. Church 8. Schneider 9. Pitcher. I forgot what it's like to have that kind of lineup! So DO NOT throw in the towel on the 2009 Mets so fast, we're not even half way done with the season.
