"Ladies and gentleman, we got him!"

As it says in the Mets press release, "Unless Johan Santana flunks a physical Saturday, he will become the starting pitcher the Mets desperately had needed...". Doesn't that statement sound so true?

It is going to make us forget about the Collapse of 2007? No. I don't think that all the anti-depressants in the world van help us forget that headache. But if they can win a World Series ring and a parade down the Canyon of Heroes, this will certainly help.

At this time, the contract details are not out yet. However, most analysts would agree that its six years and just under $140 million with signing bonuses. However, from the same Mets press release, it is said to be more benefitical to Santana than Zito's contract, making him the pitcher with the largest paycheck. Hopefully this trade and contract won't end up like Zito's first year or the magical third baseman that the team across the East River have.

I am basically restating the obvious, the same thing that every Mets fan and every person covering this deal is saying. This will help rejuvenate a broken heart team and bring some relief for the bullpen. This is a guy who will go 6, 7, 8 innings a night and probably 200 innings a game. This also takes off the pressure that was giving to Oliver Perez and John Maine early last season, even though they did performed exceptionally well for their age.

However the major question needs to be answered before we can say whether this was the blockbuster trade that everyone is hyping about, do the Mets make it to the postseason and win it all or fall again like they did last year? Of course as a Mets fan I do believe that this makes them a leader of the NL East, but I'm also thinking of this deal from a skeptic point of view.

Nevertheless, Mets fans can all agree on this, this season will have a lot a surprises, and pitchers and catchers haven't even reported for Spring Training yet.

Comments For The Podcast

I'd love to get a few more comments from fans on the Johan Santana signing. You can do that by commenting or writing a post here. Or you can do it in audio form on the comment line at 206-333-0878.

In short, I think its money well spent.

Lots of Money!

It's a lot of money spent, but we'll see if it's money well spent.

The Santana signing finally puts an end to the "will we, won't we" debate. Omar earned his paycheck during the off season, and we need to make sure that we (the fans) back him up on this decision. He sees the "Big Picture", we just see the individual games.

We finally signed a big name in the off-season, and somebody to help shore up the pitching rotation. Perhaps we can finally overcome last years pitching deficit.
But let's not forget that we also have to make sure that we'll have the offense, the defense and the overall team attitude that we need to become the Division Champs, League Champs and ultimately World Champs.

Let's GO METS!!!!

Tug Said it.....I believe it.....That settles it......
YA GOTTA BELIEVE

We're going to be paying

We're going to be paying more at the games anyway. So we might as well get something for it. We didn't get Barry Zito before last season and we lost Tom Glavine. So there was money there to spend.

I thought we'd have to give up Mike Pelfrey and one everyday player to make this stick. But since there was such a high dollar value attached to the signing I don't think anyone was willing to give up the players and the money.

We can enjoy this one for a little bit. Soon we'll get down to business and see what kind of return we get on the investment.
