A-Rod available

So by now pretty much everyone knows A Rod has optioned out of his contract with the Yankees... Now my question is do the Mets try and sign him and if they do what should be done with the playing situation at 3rd?

What I think is yes the Mets should try to sign him... We have the money to sign him and he's the best player in the game... I'd stay away from the 7+ years Boras is trying to get for A Rod but I wouldn't put it past making it a $25-30 million a season contract... A Rod has no major injury history so he'll be playing most of the games... That would be money well spent...

Now for the position problem... I'd love to see A Rod switch to 1st... Wright deserves to stay there, he's earned it... A Rod's defense as of late has been lacking so a move to first would probably reduce his errors... But Wright has said he'd move if the team signed A Rod... I hope A Rod would be a man and realize he should switch to 1st... and what about Delgado you say... well I say if we get A Rod we should try to move him back to the AL to a team like the Angels who could use a power bat and get some prospects or relievers for him... Mind you we'd probably have to eat some contract money but oh well.. that's the price of doing business

Thumbs Down On A-Rod

I have no desire to see the Mets pursue A-Rod. He's way too expensive. What could the Mets do with $30 million in the free agent market? They could get at least three excellent players for that money.

A-Rod has the offensive numbers that make some fans drool but he hasn't played on a championship team yet. So other teams are finding a way to win without A-Rod and the Mets will too.

I say Omar should take that $30 million and go get us a starting pitcher, a 2nd baseman and a corner outfielder.

mostly agree

I mostly agree, but, do you really think 30 million a year gets 3 excellent players?

I don't think there's any chance of alex rodriguez ending up in New York (except maybe the yankees) any time soon.

Based on today's papers

"I don't think there's any chance of alex rodriguez ending up in New York (except maybe the yankees) any time soon."

Based on today's papers, I might have been right at the end of October.

You were right. No one else

You were right. No one else would want to spend that kind of money except for Boston or the Mets. Boston already has Ramirez and Ortiz. The Mets obviously decided that moving Wright to first and trading Delgado were bad ideas. I agree so I'm happy with the outcome.

Slight problem with the fact

Slight problem with the fact that there aren't many difference makers available in free agency... Andruw Jones and Torii Hunter are difference makers but they are also center fielders which we already have and I cannot see them moving positions or Beltran moving positions... The pitching pool is even shallower.. as of now I see Schilling and Glavine as the best starters out there and both don't fit the type the Mets want.. Young and without injury worries.... Also I consider Rivera to resign with the Yankees

Trading won't be much easier as the players supposedly available (Santana, Willis, etc.) will cost a fortune in prospects.. A fortune we don't have... beyond Gomez, Milledge, Pelfrey, Humber and Martinez do we really have any prospects that teams would trade a top of the line starter for? And we cannot trade 3 of those players just to get one pitcher because that would leave the minor system empty of top talent

I say we jump on the chance to get the best player to hit free agency since, well 2000 when A Rod was a free agent... Plus he may come cheaper then others as the Yankees and Red Sox won't be in on the bidding by the sounds of things.. who knows A Rod with all the endorsements and media attention he brings may just end up paying for himself if the Mets sign him

A-Rod

I read that David Wright offered to move to let A-Rod play third and most talk is that Dave would go to 2nd base. What about a move to 1st base? He could certainly handle the position with ease. I know that would mean moving Carlos but he might thrive as a DH in the AL.

A-Rod is too much money.

A-Rod is too much money. Delgado had a bad year in 2007. Wouldn't Mets fans be sick if we traded Delgado and he had a monster year in 2008? I would be.

No, I have to pass on Rodriguez. I still think we can do a lot with that money.
