So looks like the Mets have fired Rick Downs and hired Rickey Henderson as their hitting coach... Seems to me that their idea of moving Howard Johnson from first base coach to hitting coach and having Henderson be the first base coach would be a better idea... Think about it.. Having the most prolific base stealer and one of the best base runners of all time reading the pitchers and catchers and telling our players when to steal... I'm salivating just thinking about it... But looks like they won't do that.. Sadly

It seems to me that this
It seems to me that this move was all about Minaya trying to look tough, make sure nobody thinks they are too safe in their job. Few jobs matter less than hitting coach on a major league team (except during Spring Training when they teach the pitchers how to bunt). I was curious as to why Henderson was chosen when Willie's main message these days seems to be about Work Ethic. But in all I don't think it was a very big deal.
More significant was the Julio Franco firing. Farewell Julio, and thanks for the dignity and substance you contributed to this team.
I hope if Julio doesn't play
I hope if Julio doesn't play somewhere this season the Mets can find some place for him as a mentor/coach to these young players.. He was great in that role... Who's our backup First baseman now?
Shawn Green and David Newhan
Shawn Green and David Newhan both have experience at 1B. Also Marlon Anderson will likely be up with the squad before long (definitely when the roster expands in September.)
I love Rickey and I hate
I love Rickey and I hate him. He's got great experience, hall of fame credentials and he's a real character to boot. He's also the guy who made styling on the field a fad. The results, as Mets fans know, ranged from comical to disastrous for the team.
I'm not a believer that the 1st and 3rd base coaches make that much of an impact so I don't think he'll hurt the team. In fact I think 3rd base is more important.
I'm glad for HoJo. Always liked him as a Met. He has paid his dues in the organization and the move to hitting coach is a step up for him.
