The Last Opening Day At Shea

robsafuto's picture

Today is the day for a fresh start. Let's go get the Phillies and set the tone for the rest of the season.

It's also the last home opener ever at Shea. I've had a lot of good memories from Shea but at the same time I know that the stadium has outlived it's usefulness. It's time for a change!

I've got my reservations about the smaller size of Citi Field. Less room for the fans. Ticket prices will surely be higher. But I can save that rant for the fall.

Let's Go Mets!

We're all doomed...! ;-)

I feel a bit like a portent of doom, Rob, but as Opening Day's go, that was one to forget, and in a hurry. We've dropped our first three against divisional rivals, and on each occasion the 'pen has blown it. Our offense wasn't great, but just like last season, we can't hold a lead in tight situations, and we can't rely on the bullpen to do anything. Sosa and Heilman are having nightmare starts to the season - not good at all. I had to watch Heilman through my fingers - virtually every pitch was a disaster waiting to happen. Is there any news on Duaner yet? We've gotta get fresh blood in the 'pen, just to break the sense of impending doom! Ah,well...I suppose it can only get better...Shea's seen plenty of nightmare Mets performances over the years, one more isn't going to make that much difference! I think we need this series against the Phils though, just to give us some confidence back.

I couldn't agree more with

I couldn't agree more with the Englishman. The bullpen definitely needs to step it up, but it is very early. I just need a 5-game win streak before I go back to school from spring break. Oh, and I live in Atlanta :( which doesn't make it any easier.

But, back on topic. Heilman must step up if we have a chance. But, I actually think the problem is not the bullpen, but rather the offense. We have some dominant young guys that can put numbers on the board, but they just aren't. They are actually getting hits, but we keep leaving guys on base. It's crazy.

It's early though. We can turn it around though, I believe.

pain

same old same old
it doesn't make any sense to me.
But I guess this is why we have to enjoy years like 1986 and 2006.

Yes...it's early..but it's also late

Sorry guys, but this team is picking up where it left off from last year. I have absolutely no confidence in anyone in that bullpen. As for position players, looks like Castillo's surgically "clean" knee is on the bum again. A four year deal for a second baseman with a bum knee?

There have been Met teams in the past that have shown "heart". With this bunch of guys (with the exception of D. Wright - who takes this stuff TO heart), I have not seen any such display.

My first game of my seven pack is next week against the Nats. I hope by then the Mets will be above .500.

A Lot Of Negatives

The last few games have been tough. Three losses in a row. Wasting a nice performance by Johan Santana. Late inning runs given up by the bullpen. The Mets need to step it up.

If the hitting picks up we solve a lot of problems. Is two runs the best we could do against Moyer? How about only one run against the Braves on Sunday? We won't win too many games only scoring one or two runs. And Willie always feels the urge to pull starters in the sixth if the game is close. We can't have that this season and expect to be competitive.

If the Mets take the next two from the Phillies we'll all feel a lot better I think. But this team needs to do it on the field.
