Welcome to September baseball folks. The good news out of Florida tonight is that the Phillies lost 7-6 to the Marlins which means that we've gained a pair of games in the standings over the past two days.
I think it is going to be an exciting month. Hopefully not too exciting, especially if the Mets are able to turn things around and win most of their games.
Sweeping the Braves is a good sign. Delgado is thawing out. Mike Pelfrey could provide us a much needed boost either as a starter or out of the bullpen.
There's plenty of work to do. Jose Reyes is slumping. Billy Wagner will probably give us heart attacks. And the team has been getting caught way too much on the basepaths. I'm looking to Willie Randolph to figure out how to effectively use his bullpen.
We have one more series against the Braves and another vs. Philadelphia. We need to take at least 2 of 3 in both those series'. The Phillies have a weaker bullpen than the Mets in spite of the results of the sweep this week. And that could help us along real well. They blew a 5-0 lead today in fact.
The second half of September looks like cake with games against Washington and Florida. Lets not be fooled though. Teams with nothing to lose often will get up to try and act as spoilers.
For now all eyes are on Pedro tomorrow at Cincinnati. We need to take at least two of three there to salvage the road trip. Heck, we are capable of a sweep. Let's Go Mets!

Pedro was great yesterday.
Pedro was great yesterday. It was almost like the first day he pitched for the New York Mets. He was weak in the first inning giving up 2 runs and then clicking after each and every inning. Then they gave it to the bullpen until the ninth where Wagner almost blows it. Almost follows the same timeline as his first start as a Met. But he had great control and he kept going up on his velocity. We needed him because he is the one that keeps the team together along with Reyes in terms of chemistry.
Wagner needs a week off, at least. Even before August he gave me a heart attack every time I heard "Enter Sandman" in the late innings. He always ends up giving a few hits and maybe one or two runs. He really has to start clicking like the Wagner of earlier this season.
Delgado is doing great, especially with his solo shot into Right Field during the ninth inning. Reyes has to start getting hot even though the Mets are still winning. Nevertheless, the Mets need his speed on the bases even though they have been getting picked off now.
With the exception of Wagner I believe that the bullpen is starting to get back together. One or two spots of concern during the game but they kept in it and won the last four.
Lets try to win this game and maybe go for back to back sweeps. So far a great start to September and compared to other teams in the NL I believe that we have the most easy September schedule and we can really go hard on the Braves and Phillies. Those two series are the only times for concern, our only real fight in September. Nevertheless, Let's Go Mets!!!
Back to back sweeps would be
Back to back sweeps would be great. The bats are alive and why not? Look at our lineup and you can see quality hitters from top to bottom.
Looks like Willie didn't
Looks like Willie didn't care enough about back-to-back sweeps to "send his very best." Seriously, resting Delgado, Reyes, Lo Duca, Green and Alou all on the same day? And Maine's total collapse was no help either.
