How can I be happy after watching the Mets blow this one to the Braves?
The hitting was there in general but oh that relief pitching. Aaron Heilman made a rookie mistake, getting beat when he grooved one on a 2-0 pitch to Kelly Johnson. Johnson struck out four times last night but hit two homers today.
Jose Valentin made a key error in the eighth that opened the door. Heilman still needs to get those three outs though. The three run home by Johnson made it 9-6 Braves.
The Mets had chances in the bottom of the 8th and the 9th with a couple of guys on. They ran out of clutch hits I guess.
David Wright's slump continued. No hits today. Lots of gum chewing though. Someone mentioned on another blog that Wright has been chewing gum a lot. He made an error late in the game attempting to field a grounder while blowing a bubble. It seemed unprofessional and really non-chalant of him to do that.
Next time up there was the gum again. I'm not sure what gives but it is ridiculous that he's chewing so much.
Beltran was cold again and the offense was carried by Alou, Green and Reyes.
The bats will go hot and cold. Today they were warm but the guys who followed Tom Glavine just didn't do it. Not a good feeling.

Wright and Delgado
I'm sorry, I know I should not be laughing at the fact that Wright is blowing a bubble but the way you worded it Rob just made me laugh even though it is defintely not professional and you are totally right Rob. It almost looks like he doesn't care. I do remember seeing him with the gum and it clearly isn't working. The fact that he isn't hitting homeruns is one thing, but not getting the hits when it matters is another. That is totally rediculous. It is like he is a totally different person, hopefully he will snap out of it. It is almost as if the new contract is getting to his head.
Another person I want to comment about is Carlos Delgado. What the heck is going on with him too. Has he hit the ball out of the infield yet. He had one hit today or so and that is it and no homeruns either. His fielding has not looked much better with that fiasco earlier in the season when he missed a ball thrown right at him. I just don't no what to say about these guys. They are paid to produce and they just aren't doing it and I don't know about you all but I'm tired of losing to those damn Braves. It just gets annoying after a while. And to add on to today, I now realize that I get to go to school tommorow and get harassed by all the stupid Braves fans (since I live in ATL). Geez, can this day get any worse.
But, I think Beltran will snap out of it. I just hate the Braves.
If it was any other team
If it was any other team (including the Phillies) that we just went 2-4 against, I would shrug it off. Being the Braves that it was against, it just re-kindles "the bad old days". We can't say...wait 'til our guys start hitting...because for the most part they are. You guys know that once Davey and Carlos D. start hitting, someone else will cool off. It's just the way of the game. Very rare to have the whole team firing on all cylinders....and even if they do...then that's tough to sustain.
I hope for all of our sakes that the Mets take it to the Braves the next time around.
The Braves definitely kindle
The Braves definitely kindle some sort of fire in me as a Mets fan. Losing to them is tough.
I think the situation points to the fact that the Mets have some issues in the middle relief roles. Schoenweis and Burgos are adventures out there. And Heilman has lost that edge he had in the second half of last season.
I really do think Wright and Delgado will come around. They weren't the worst culprits in the loss yesterday anyway. Giving up three run homers in back-to-back innings is almost as bad as Chase Wright giving up four homers in a row to the Red Sox.
Bubble Gum
I think we are over-reacting a bit. I don't care if David is chewing gum or chewing the fat. I don't care if he looks like he's trying too hard or not trying hard enough. What is important to me is that he produces overall.
If David producers over the season, I don't care how hard it looks like he's working.
I'm not worried about the Braves. I believe the Mets are the better team and over the 2007 season that will become clear.
