In Defense Of Ollie

Despite what one might think from looking at the line score, I think Oliver Perez pitched a pretty solid game last night. He was cruising through the first four and retired the first nine straight. As it was, he got charged with two earned runs. But he would've escaped unscathed from what turned into the disasterous nine-run fifth inning were it not for an absolutely dead-wrong call by Bruce Froemming, who called a shot off the wall a home run even though the replay showed it clearly wasn't.

Critics will say he lost it after that but clearly he didn't - he settled down to get the next two batters and would've had the third had it not been a bonehead play by WEasley and a otal misjudgement of an easy shot by Green.

He pitched very well, overcame a few scary arm-slot issues, had a lot of movement to his pitches, and seemed very well focused to me.

At the same time the Met bats seemed utterly baffled by Zito's mediocre curve ball.

Losses like that leave me bitter. No good reason why we couildn't take that opener from them, but the final score makes it look like a blowout.
