While we look at being consistently inconsistent, it is reassuring to know that we can rely on one element of the team. The bullpen has never failed to ensure that we have absolutely no chance of winning games that have been relatively tight. As I sit here, Jorge Sosa has just given up a grand slam home run. I've lost track by mid April of the number of homers given up by the bull pen, especially in tight positions. Frustrating is an understatement - we have to face facts with this. we are not pennant material if we continually shoot ourselves in the foot in the seventh and eighth inning. 2006 has never seemed so far away....It's more like '96 than '06 at the moment.
Here We Go Again...

Can I Slam My Head Into A Wall Please?
I came back from Hawaii for this??????
I was finally able to watch the Mets on TV after two weeks, and I've been TOTALLY disappointed by this team this week. Our bullpen stunk (when are we getting rid of the lot of them?), our hitters were somewhere in Botswana instead of Chicago, and the defense looked like they could have given a damn.
Having now gotten my blood pressure under 200, i checked and it wasn't September, and we didn't have a 7 game lead to blow.
Guys, get all this nonsense out of your system now....because we aren't going very far if we keep this up.
Tug Said it.....I believe it.....That settles it......
YA GOTTA BELIEVE
This was a very tough loss.
This was a very tough loss. I hoped that the team would bounce back from yesterday's loss but it didn't happen. Even worse, the bullpen continues to get shelled.
I keep telling myself the NY
I keep telling myself the NY Football Giants got off to a slow start too........ :)
Tailoring expectations....
I suppose one of the reasons for the frustration felt by us all at the moment is the expectation that we should be so much better. OK, the Cubs are on a bit of a roll, but player for player, they shouldn't be capable of hammering us into the ground. Are we guilty of overestimating the abilities of the team? I mean, as I sit here and think about it, if we had an open market and offered all our players for sale, who would be snapped up by the real power clubs - Wright, Reyes, Beltran, Santana, Wagner (possibly), Maine (kind of...). Is that the extent of our depth? We only really have 3 players capable with a bat of any kind of decent numbers? Only 1 or 2 of our starting pitchers is of the quality needed? Don't get me started on the 'pen...apart from Billy of course.
In the cold light of this Manchester day, I really shouldn't be surprised by what's being served up more often than not. The spark and the energy, and the sheer sense of being able to do anything, that made 2006 my favourite season ever as a Mets fan, even more than 1986, has gone. Where, I don't know. Whether we'll get it back, I don't know. I just know there is something missing . Part of it is playing staff, part of it is mental. Ah, well, part of following the Mets is knowing when we suck, and knowing we won't suck forever! If we get lucky, maybe we'll only suck 'til May, when we'll explode on a streak to end all streaks....
Keep the faith...
Ya gotta believe
