Today the mets announce the signing of Sandy Alomar Jr. to a minor league deal and an invataion to spring training.
I don't quite get why we made this deal. We already have a great backup catcher in Ramon Castro. Alomar is an improvment over DeFelice as a 3rd catcher so I expect hi to start the season in New Orleans.

I'm Surprised
I thought that we were set with LoDuca, Castro and DeFelice. This is puzzling.
The way I saw this playing out pre-Alomar was that DeFelice would start the season in AAA and be called in the event of an injury. It's not very likely that a player of Alomar's caliber would accept a minor league assignment.
So it seems to me that Sandy Alomar Jr is meant to compete for Ramon Castro's roster spot.
I agree. Very puzzling.
I agree. Very puzzling. Maybe a veteran presence like Alomar could help DeFelice in AAA.
I don't know that Alomar Jr.
I don't know that Alomar Jr. would accept a position on the minor league roster. The Mets should bring him on as a coach.
Mets sign new catcher
The FAN on Friday made it sound like it was just a favor for Alomar's father (the Met's bench coach). The FAN Met's beat reporter (can't recall his name at this moment) even said Alomar is not expected to make the team, and is using this time to showcase his talents so he can be selected by other teams.
