I was busy creating a podcast related to the news and my opinions, so I didn't get to hear the game last night, but reports about the game said that Mets fans were booing David Wright for going 0-5.
Now I can understand if
1. Those fans subscribed to a theory floated on this site that David Wright blowing bubbles indicates a lack of caring
OR if
2. Those fans want to send a message to the ownership of the Mets that David Wright should not remain on the Mets
OR if
3. Those fans really root for another team that plays in NYC and want the Mets to drop Wright. (So they can finally get a good thirdbasemen)
But barring any of those reasons, Mets fans who boo their own player who is trying but simply going through a slump, while they have a right to boo, are sadly not very intelligent.
I don't believe Wright is going through the motions or doesn't care. I thought it was good that the Mets locked him up long term and I want him to stay a Met.
From what I hear of batting "experts", David is swinging differently then he did in the past; his bat speed is a bit slower because he's got a "loop" in his swing. But if you read Keith Hernandez's book on the 1985 season, you'll see that that is common and not a cause for pressure to be placed on him.
Listen, it's clear the Mets are the best team in the NL East and barring major injuries are going to the playoffs. So let's enjoy the ride and try not to beat a player that will be important to us as we drive towards a World Series appearance - and win.

Don't Boo David Wright
As a fan for 30 years I know that fans in the stands need to find a way to vent their frustrations when things aren't going well on the field. That usually manifests itself with choruses of boos.
I also think that not all boos are created equal. Booing high dollar free agent and perennial disappointing performer Bobby Bonilla is one thing. But booing homegrown, bargain priced, always giving his all David Wright is another thing.
The guy is young. He's going to have his ups and downs and his career. There will be a lot more ups than downs. And the Mets will be a better team for it.
Let's lay off David Wright. But please feel free to send a Flushing cheer or two the way of Chan Ho Park.
