Big Time House Cleaning

The Mets pulled off a pretty wild trade that has netted the team a guy who looks to be the setup man for Francisco Rodriquez.

The Mets picked up J.J. Putz a 31-year old relief pitcher from Seattle as part of a three team, 12-player trade. When the smoke cleared three signature Mets players were gone.

Aaron Heilman and Endy Chavez were shipped to the Mariners. Joe Smith was shipped to the Indians. Three minor league players, including Mike Carp, were shipped off by the Mets as well.

The New York Post weighs in on the deal and Putz:

That's better...!

Much better stuff today. Oliver Perez was particularly impressive, I thought, and hopefully points the way for Mike Pelfrey by showing you can have terrible games and recover it with some disciplined pitching work. Joe Smith looks fabulous, especially compared to Aaron Heilman's recent efforts. More importantly, David Wright is looking smooth again, swinging freely and hitting well.

Joe Smith This Years Surprise

This time last year Brian Bannister was the talk of the Mets having won an unlikely roster spot and a place in the starting rotation. This year we have Joe Smith.

He's a guy with 47 innings of pro ball under his belt, yet he could be one of the most important pieces of the Mets' bullpen. He's got a drop down sidearm delivery that could give batters hell in tight spots.
