My not too humble opinion is this. This is a do or die series for the Mets. If they don't at least stop the bleeding (and that means a series split) there probably won't be much that could be done to help the Mets' prospects this season. The Mets are seven games out of the division race and three games out of the wild card. Guess who's right about the Mets in the wild card race? Yep, the Dodgers. This is a team the Mets must beat in order to get to the playoffs. They have already lost badly to Arizona, possibly the worst team in the NL and the wild card leader San Francisco. Yes, it can get worse. I hope it doesn't. Ya gotta believe!

The Mets are really in a deep, dark, and sinister hole right now. The bats have gone silent and I don't think that shuffling the lineup helps too much.

Good game last night for Jason Bay with the bat and in the field. I don't care what kind of a slump Bay is in, he needs to be in the lineup every day. Mainly because he's a high dollar free agent and it's way to early to give up on the guy. But also because you can't get out of a slump while on the bench. Johan Santana did what Johan has done for the most of the season. He's one of the only reasons why the Mets aren't worse off right now.
We have to take it one day at a time right now and I think this is a big day for Mike Pelfrey. He has pitched poorly lately and with the news that John Maine is done for the season we are going to need Pelfrey and Jon Niese to step up and show some leadership in the starting rotation. Maine is done, perhaps for good, and Oliver Perez might be traded before the week is out.
Ironic that during the Mets' hot streak they were winning everyone's games but Santana's and now it's only Santana's. Can't watch the game but it looks like Perez was actually just brought into a jam and hot out of it. Wow! Now the Mets hitters have gone down 1-2-3 in innings 10, 11, 12, and 13. That's not going to cut it.

The Mets are done with this West Coast road trip and perhaps they're done for the season too. I haven't seen a team with so many supposedly quality hitters shut down so badly for so many games. The Mets had chances yesterday to score earlier in the game (bases loaded and one out, for example) and failed to do so. Rod Barajas struck out and then the pitchers spot was up. Sure the Mets came back but then they couldn't score more than two runs within fourteen innings. Today more of the same. Carlos Beltran has done nothing since returning. Jason Bay hasn't done nearly enough to salvage his season, and Ike Davis' batting average has been slowly but steadily sinking. Remember Rod Barajas when he had ten home runs two months ago? He's done nothing since then. The Mets have gotten good pitching from unheralded starters like R.A. Dickey, Jon Niese and Hisanori Takahashi but those efforts have been wasted on this trip too. I just don't see way out of this rut.
This Is It

A Dark Place

Bay and Santana

Perez
I rest my case. But I blame the offense way more than Perez.
And if they think the cheering throngs of Citi Field are going to wake up this offense, they'd better be ready for torches and pitchforks.
Finished
