The Next Two Games

They're do or die for the Mets. That's what I think. The Mets can go into the All-Star break either two games out of first or four or more out of first. If we're back to not being able to beat the Braves again then there's not much hope for the Mets to do anything else this season.

Doomed

Hard to feel good about 2010 at this point. For all of the good things the Mets are back to their old tricks of losing to the Braves again. The injuries to Reyes are especially tough when you consider how weak the lineup is at this point.

I don't even know who these Braves are or why the Mets are playing so scared of them.  Aren't these the same Braves who were in last place when we made our first surge to first place?  The only offense all week has come from Santana and Dickey.  They've gone from winning, what, 7 straight series at Citi to dropping 2 straight and limping into the break.  But don't worry, there's an 11-game road trip coming!  Can one hope to win any more than 5 of those really?  My proposal for a successful trip is: coming home still in 2nd place (or better but that's borderline delusional).

Salvaging The Series

At least we got one game with the win today. Cold comfort I know as the Mets lost ground on the Braves and go into the All-Star break 4 games out of first place. Johan Santana pitched his second great start in a row dipping his ERA below 3.00. Ike Davis got a couple of hits. Maybe the rest over the break will help him out. Jason Bay got the day off. Both Bay and Jeff Francoeur need to step it up offensively if the Mets are going to have a chance to make the playoffs. Right now Jeff Francoeur appears to be the odd man out in the outfield for when Carlos Beltran returns.

Not "doomed" at all!

I haven't posted in a while here, but I have been following the team as closely as ever and I sure don't share Rob's sentiments that it's "hard to feel good about 2010". I'm feeling pretty good about our team right now, knock on wood. We entered the break 4 games out of first, but in position to make the playoffs via the Wild Card. A lot can happen in the second half, but I like our position and I'm confident in our ability to win games. I feel like we have 2 reliable, sometimes dominant staff leaders in Johan (red-hot right now) and Pelfrey (struggling but still great numbers over all). John Niese has been consistent and good as well as the 3rd guy, and his youth is promising. We've gotten great starts from Dickey and we have Takahashi in the bullpen again ready to start if needed, with Maine and Olly still needing to prove they still have it but with the potential to contribute down the stretch. Our bullpen has held it's own for the most part. Pitching wins championships, and right now we're getting good enough pitching to win ball games.

What's more, assuming Reyes' lingering oblique doesn't turn into anything more serious, our lineup is healthy (again, fervently knock on wood!). By next week we could see a lineup that reads 1. Reyes, 2. Castillo, 3. Wright, 4. Beltran, 5. Bay, 6. Davis, 7. Francouer, 8. Barajas, with Pagan ready to platoon in for the corner OFers as needed. That's the best lineup of healthy players (knock on wood) we've had since before Delgado went down last April. Pagan is putting up Reyes-esque numbers, Wright seems to be back to his old self, Davis has shown promise and flashes of future greatness, and Bay is too good of a hitter to have as poor a second half as he had a first (knock on wood 4 times over). We've had a shitload of bad luck the past 3 years, so it's only natural for us to be pessimistic, but I'm optimistic that we can make a playoff run this second half.

Health of the Lineup

Reyes is out of the lineup tonight. Who knows what we'll get out of Carlos Beltran. I hope we get a lot but nothing is guaranteed. The Mets' record is better now than it has been over the last two seasons at the All-Star break but the recent poor performances against the Florida Marlins, the Nationals, the Reds and the Braves make it hard to be optimistic. There are a lot of good things happening right now that bode well for the future. But I still don't know about this season. It looks like the Mets will have to be even a little better than the 2008 team to get a spot in the playoffs.

Reyes

But he was supposed to be in the lineup, so it was close.  Hope it's something minor or just extra caution.

And I'd say getting Beltran back now is like getting a free free agant if he produces anything like Beltran can and all we have to do is be better than Atlanta or Philadelphia probably to get a playoff spot and the division title is still well within grasp.
