Mets - Reds Series Discussion

vs.
Reds vs. Mets | July 5th - July 7th 2010

Mets - Reds - Phillies - Braves
Even stranger than the Mets/Reds series (what just happened? bases loaded, Rolen struck out, then it says an RBI HBP and Manuel tossed?) is I don't know what to root for in the Braves/Phillies series. I had been viewing Philadelphia as the ultimate team to beat this year but now with Utley out 8 weeks (or more, ask Beltrán) they're sliding toward .500 and it might be Atlanta after all. Bring back the John Rocker pennant races of old. I guess it's time to root for the Phillies...or maybe a 2-1 series either way so they beat each other up some.
... 2 minutes later ...
Well, that was quick, there goes that game. 7-1 and I'm not expecting a breakthrough against the Reds' starter, a veteran of two games this year.
... 5 minutes later ...
7-3 now with ½ a game left. This team kills me. Do I get involved enough to wait for the comeback? Ugh, I know I will.
... 3 minutes later ...
7-6??? Are you kidding me? We answered a 6-spot with a 5-spot??
8-6 now, and it continues....Who is this Joey Votto and why haven't I heard of him until like 3 days ago???
Who To Root For
Definitely the Phillies. Whoever's on top I root against. Actually it's more like a silent hoping since actually rooting for the Phillies violates many of my superstitions.
Joey Votto I've heard of although I haven't thought about him this season til last night. What a pain in the a$%.
By the way the Mets got completely robbed on the phantom hit-by-pitch that forced in a run. At first Keith and Gary thought that Rolen was really hit by the pitch but the replays were definitely inconclusive. So the ump's original call should have stood because there was no way to determine the result after the fact. Of course, no replay was used. That play was the beginning of the end for Pelfrey.
now THAT's run support
I glance at the ESPN GameCast thing and see:
Cincinnati 0
New York 1
"Santana homered to right"
Can't wait to see it on ESPN or mets.com later....shame it was a solo shot.
Johan's Homer
The way the Mets have been hitting behind Santana he needs to take matters into his own hands. Two more RBIs for Bay. He might end up having a nice season after all.
Complete Game Shutout
Johan did it all tonight. He got the game winning RBI with his home run and went the distance with a complete game shutout. He has had two strong starts in a row now and I feel a lot better about him now. Perhaps the issue with the lady on the Florida golf course was weighing on his mind when he wasn't pitching well.
On the down side it was another bad night at the plate for Ike Davis. He's still only a rookie so I hope he works it out with HoJo soon.
Ike
Not really worried about Ike, he's played himself out of going into big slumps and his defense hasn't been affected by small slumps.
It's almost a shame Santana couldn't win the game 1-0, would've been poetic, but nice job finishing it off. I wish I'd seen him send Jerry back to the bench.
Mets pitchers' HRs
OK, this is really going to bug me now. I was going to say that this was the first Mets pitcher to homer since Pelfrey about 3 years ago. But I glanced at Pelf's stats and he hasn't homered. Who am I thinking of? It was someone Pelfrey-like, about 3 years ago, someone fairly big, not a great hitter, just got one good swing. I'll have to dig into year-end complete team stats if this doesn't come to me.....
John Maine
Gary Cohen mentioned it quickly at the end of the one clip on mets.com
