Significant Headwinds

Well, the Mets had a great month of June. They won at home and they won on the road. David Wright's bat came alive and no one hit better during the month. R.A. Dickey and Mike Pelfrey stifled opposing batters. Now it's July and the Mets seem to be back to their old losing ways. Johan Santana pitched much better but got little run support. K-Rod is blowing games again. And even the games he doesn't blow he turns into an adventure. Last Friday night he gave up two hits and had to pick a runner off base to get the final out. Meanwhile the Braves are winning and now have a three game lead in the NL East.

What's going on? What's going on is the dynamics of who's hot and who's not are changing again. Ike Davis has cooled off as evidenced by his sinking batting average. Jose Reyes has missed the last couple of games due to injury. Starting pitchers like Hisanori Takahashi and R.A. Dickey have proven to be less reliable. The good news on Dickey is that he bounced back yesterday. Takahashi? Who knows. Jason Bay is doing what he's done all season, play a spectacularly mediocre offensive game with a distinct lack of clutch and that's not helping to fill the gap. The fact is that during every season you have hot and cold streaks, injuries and players that surprise you in a good way. I think that the Mets have hit a stretch where some moves will need to be made in order to plug the gaps created by slumps, injuries and the perennial poor performers.

The Mets have to grasp the reality that Takahasi and R.A. Dickey won't be enough to anchor the starting rotation. We also don't know if John Maine or Oliver Perez will return to pitch well this season. That's why the Mets should look at going after Cliff Lee or Roy Oswalt. Cliff Lee will cost a lot but that's for Omar to figure out. Carlos Beltran will return soon and that may solve some offensive problems but it also shouldn't push Angel Pagan out of the lineup. The Mets need Pagan's speed and consistent offense. That means either Jason Bay or Jeff Francouer move to the bench. Bay can't be moved so I think Francouer is the odd man out. The Mets should consider trading Luis Castillo if they can. He's a good second baseman but he's injured too often and Ruben Tejada is maturing nicely. At the very least Castill should split the job with Tejada.

The Mets need to make some moves if they want to remain competitive in the division and wild card races. I think that these moves are a good start. What moves would you make?
