nice

Nice not to have to hang my head when I go to work tomorrow surrounded by Twins fans.  Even nicer is I get the series on TV here as local Twins games, love it, after getting Dickey's Tigers game the other night.  Now let's take the series and force Atlanta to put up or shut up.

What's With Johan?

Another disappointing performance by Johan Santana yesterday. In fact each each of his last four starts Johan has given up at least four runs and his ERA has creeped up from a great 2.76 to a pretty good 3.55. Why has he been so ineffective compared to earlier starts? Granted it hasn't helped that the Mets didn't score a run in his last two starts. The Mets seem to average between zero and two runs when he starts. Even still, I'm concerned at Johan's inability to get into a groove early in games. He settles down after that but what is happening during these meltdowns? Given the situation with John Maine I think that the Mets desperately need Johan on top of his game in order to have a chance at a playoff spot.

possibilities

Well, you might think he's bothered by that news item of the week, but his decline predates that.  He could be having some weakness from the surgery he's now had twice or the same situation is developing a third time.  He's a better second half pitcher, but I just want him to be as good as he was earlier, not asking for improvement.  It could be a by-product of never getting any run support and pitching tight because of it.  It could even be a psychological thing that he's not being called on to be a stopper like in previous years and he's not used to it.

Ehhh, everything clicked in this game, just enjoy it.  Pretty good hitting up and down the lineup, power and otherwise.  A streaky Francoeur seems to be stepping it up again.  We got through the easy part of the interleague with flying colors, then took four of six from Detroit and Minnesota, which means I get to let some Twins fans have it when I go back to work on Tuesday....  We split with the Yankees, which let's face it is fine.  We got through the things that have buried Mets teams in previous years--used to be the May trip to the Coast, now it's interleague.  And ½ a game out is looking good--I still don't see Atlanta keeping it up.
