A Big Weekend

Look, the Mets have stunk it up for the last few weeks (6-13 since the 8 game win streak) but a good showing (at least 2 of 3) in this series can at least create some optimism so the season doesn't look like a total wash for Mets fans. Low expectations? Hell yes. No matter. Right now the Mets are in a battle to keep the fans in it for 2010. After the last couple of seasons I think fatigue is setting in (I know it is for me) and we can't take these skids much longer.

close not good enough

I don't know what to make of it, but it seems like if the Mets score x runs on a given night, the opponent comes up with (x + 2), usually in the late innings.  Except for two Phillies games at the start of the month, they Mets haven't been getting blown out.  They've lost 11 games this month already by 1-2 runs.  So either we're in games and not getting clutch hits (yes), the (overworked) bullpen giving up a late run or two we can't afford (yes) or we've been out of games and had some late rallies to crawl back into them (yes) but then either not make it quite back or give the lead right back (yes again).

Rolling the dice, I think the Mets have a decent shot today, better than tomorrow night since, let's face it, since Sabathia (unless he gets hammered) will still be pitching in the 8th-9th, whereas Santana will go 6 and then roll the dice with the bullpen.

Jason Bay Grooving

The win last night was made possible by Jason Bay who had four hits and scored three runs. His batting average is close to .300 now and is the best average in the regular lineup. Unfortunately his RBI production is very weak. Only 16 RBIs and that's probably because he has been batting behind guys who weren't hitting and Bay isn't hitting for power. In order for things to really click, and we saw a little of this last night, Reyes, Jason Bay and David Wright need to be hitting pretty well. If those three guys get it together in a game the Mets probably score enough runs to win.

Something Positive

With the season going the way it is I find myself looking for anything to hang my hat on. I'll take 2 out of 3 from the Yankees for starters. We got what we needed from Johan Santana and Jason Bay in the final game tonight. Two homers for Bay. He's the hottest Met hitter right now. It doesn't get any easier with the Phils up next but it's also an opportunity to regain some ground in the division. The ninth inning was scary, but what else is new. K-Rod strikes out A-Rod swinging for the final out.
