Rod Barajas Again

Two homers for Rod Barajas tonight including a walk off in the 9th. Two homers for Ike Davis too. Mike Pelfrey pitched well but K-Rod blew the save. Ike Davis made a crazy dugout catch in the 9th to save K-Rod. Barajas now has 9 homers. He's a bargain compared to Jason Bay right now.

Back to Back

Walk-off homers for two Mets catchers. Big win today, can't really comment on the rest of the game because I couldn't start watching until the 9th inning.

I can!

haha i did watch the whole game, so i can comment on it. We played pretty even throughout the game. Their starter Todd Wellemeyer pitched awfully and walked/HBP'd 4 batters in the first 2 innings, and Pagan tripled to capitalize on that. Jason Bay had a nice game with 2 RBI's although he's still not hitting very well. Johan pitched very well and quieted my concerns that he was hurt last week, proving he's still a staff ace: 2 of his 4 earned runs were actually let up by 2 Nieve and Feliciano with 2 outs in the 8th, had he stayed in the game we probably wouldn't have needed Blanco's extra-innings heroics anyway!

While it's true the mets went 3-3 this week and had cooled down from our tear, I think we're playing much the same style of baseball as we were then. We won on 2 walkoff homers (and a 3rd game winning homer in the 9th), and we lost on 2 walkoff homers, so clealry we're sticking around in a lot of awfully close games.

The next week is a chance where we could further prove our mettle against some games against some beatable but not terrible teams. The real test is against Cy Young candidate Tim Lincecum tommorow, but if Olly could somehow outduel him or we could get on the tired San Fran bullpen enough then it would be an encouraging sweep of a first place team and a nice footing for the rest of May, which by the looks of our schedule is an opportunity to really assert ourselves as contenders entering the summer months.

The Return of Guillermo Mota

Sort of ironic that Henry Blanco won the game against none other than Guillermo "The Heartbreaker" Mota. He blew some key games with the Mets. Speaking of blowing it. Again with the bullpen failing to hold a lead. And did my eyes deceive me or did K-Rod pitch two innings? Seriously though, Jose Reyes, David Wright and Jeff Francouer are in a bad place. Wright has shown some power lately but it's very inconsistent. I give Jason Bay a pass today because he had 2 RBIs. His numbers for the season are still horrible though. I'm very concerned about the lack of production from the 3-4-5 hitters. Two games in a row the game was won by the 8th hitter in the lineup. Good thing that happened because the middle is in a bad slump. I think that if one of those guys can break out consistently over a few games that it will get easier for everyone else.

I also watched how they pitched Ike Davis today. They are officially pitching around him. Behind Wright he's the most feared hitter in the lineup. Jason Bay should take note. The scouts consider a guy who hasn't been up long enough to finish a cup of coffee a tougher out than Bay. At some point pride has to kick in and a guy has to start banging the ball.

Good, Bad and Ugly

Then Mets should've swept the Giants this weekend. In spite of facing Tim Lincecum and Oliver Perez' awful start the Mets had the lead late then the bullpen blew that lead. So frustrating. Anyway, it was a good/bad/ugly series. GOOD: Winning the series, coming from behind in all the games, starting pitching in 2 of the games. BAD: The bullpen blowing leads late in all 3 games. UGLY: Oliver Perez on Sunday. It's tough to watch a guy who takes 25 pitches to complete each inning. Too many walks. Not challenging hitters effectively. He's a mess right now.

should've, could've

I wouldn't say the Mets should've swept the Giants this weekend because there's no way you should pick the Mets in a Lincecum/Perez matchup, but once we got the game even with Lincecum out of the game, it turned into a 3-inning game, which like every game recently would turn on who got the last HR.  We got a lead but no insurance runs and let them take it back.  It reminded me of the bike race where the guy makes it almost to the finish line and raises his arms triumphantly, falls off and the #2 sails across the line to win.

Washington is going to be an interesting series.

Sweeping The Giants

The Mets should have swept the Giants. That's not based on the pre-series analysis of the match ups. That's based on the fact that the Mets were up 2 games in the series and were leading in the 8th inning of the third game. So I think it's reasonable to expect that the bullpen can pitch 2 innings without blowing the lead.
