Rained Out - Doubleheader Tomorrow

It's no surprise that the Mets game was rained out today. They're going to try a doubleheader tomorrow. Unfortunately ticket holders from the game tonight are not invited without first having to switch tickets. Tickets for the original Tuesday game tomorrow will be honored according to MLB. Ticket holders for the rain out can switch the tickets out for the double header or for a later game.

1000 Hits

David Wright just got a hit to drive in a run. It was the thousandth hit of his career. It was David's second hit of the game tonight. Hopefully he's thawing out. In any case , only a few players in history have reached 1000 hits quicker. Congrats David. Incidentally Ike Davis followed up with a double to drive in Wright and Jose Reyes. There's something very right (no pun intended) about Ike Davis driving in Reyes and Wright.

Hisanori TaKahashi

TaKahashi has been one of the pleasant surprises of the 2010 season so far. He's been getting the job done in long relief and striking out a lot of hitters. They just mentioned that he has 20 strikeouts in 14 innings. Hence the capital K in his name.

last night's comment

Hmmm, I posted last night, don't see it anywhere, but it's even more so now:

How about those 1st place Mets?  Pennants aren't won in April, but they sure can be lost and it looked like we were heading that way.  9-1 homestand??  Seems like a good time for a podcast, no?

7 Game Win Streak

Hopefully I'll have some time on Saturday morning to record a podcast. I checked last season and the Mets longest win streak was 7 games. It occurred in early May. I sure hope we can extend this one. We need to beat those Phillies.

I have some questions though. Is Ike Davis for real? I hope so. It's still early though and his contributions have helped to make a big difference during this streak. Also, I'm only truly comfortable with Johan Santana and Mike Pelfrey as starters right now. Niese is okay but I'm worried about Ollie and John Maine. What's the plan if either Maine or Perez can't get it together?

What to do about Daniel Murphy when he returns soon? If Ike Davis is for real then Murphy's time at first would just be here and there. I don't think a demotion to Buffalo would make sense beyond a rehab assignment. It seems as though Daniel Murphy might end up being traded.

The Gameplan for Murphy

Ike Davis is definetly for real. We're not sure if he'll continue hitting .320 and driving in runs as a productive 6 hitter for the whole season, but he's definetly the plan moving forward at first base. The Mets management sees him evolving into a slugger who can hit 25 homers a year and bat in the high .200's, low .300's. He's also a pretty good feilder and has a cannon arm (he used to pitch in college) and even his name sounds like a star (Ike? really? what a good name for baseball haha). So unless he gets injured, I expect him to patrol 1B for us for the short term AND the long term future, and Mets fans should be very happy to have him.

This means murphy, who is also a left handed hitter, probably won't be playing much first base when he returns (barring an injury or sudden, terrible slump for Davis). The Mets plan to use him in more of a utility role when he returns: he played 2B in the minors, played LF and 1B last year, and could probably be taught 3B with his skill set). Tatis is the right-handed utility guy who can play lots of positions with moderate pop and ok batting average, and I think the mets view Murphy as the younger, better hitting, left handed version of him moving forward.

BUT, he is also a prime candidate for trade. If Johan's last performance was any indication, he's not totally healthy, and Maine/Olly have both already been iffy at times. Should any member(s) of our rotation implode or get hurt, as happened last year, we may need to trade for somebody, and Murphy would be the most desirable tradeable player because a) he's young, b) he can hit .300 c) he has upside in the power department and d) we don't have a position for him!

let's not forget the tomahawkers

As enjoyable as a 7-or-more-game winning streak is, don't forget to enjoy Atlanta's current NINE-game losing streak.  I kept reading those preseason picks and didn't understand why everyone was so high on Atlanta surging back for Bobby Cox's last year.  I don't hate them as much anymore as Philadelphia or the Yankees, but still it's sweet.
