Mets - Cubs Series Discussion

vs.

Ike Davis Versus The Cubs
The arrival of Ike Davis is the big news of this series. Let's hope it's not too soon. The Mets need something though. I hope Davis can help out with some youthful exuberance...and his bat of course.
Starting Rotation
We expected the starting rotation to be the biggest weakness going into the season. Well I can't say it instills me with confidence but I don't think it is the biggest of our concerns by a longshot. Santana had a bad start but two qood ones. Pelfrey has exceeded expectations, and Ollie is showing us what he is capable of. Neise has been a nice surprise, and I don't feel nervous when it's his turn. So that leaves Maine as the glaring problem but I think that is pretty easily remidied.
Jennry Mejia is a starter. True he is too young to be thrust in the rotation right away but I think he is surprising us with his talent and power. I think we should send him down to Buffalo for a couple starts and let him get a couple 7-inning games under his belt, and see what he can do. In the meantime, we have another quality starter in Takahashi. Though he has been thrust into fastball-only situations in relief so far, apparently the guy has a repetoire of six pitches that he can use in a game, all with quality. I'd like to see Maine ply his skills as long reliever in the bullpen for the remainder of the season, give Takahashi Maine's spot in the rotation, and as soon as Escobar or Shawn Green are back send Mejia down for a metamorphosis.
Oh yeah
...of course this is assuming that Omar Minaya actually has some kind of a plan, which seems doubtful at the moment.
Mets and Japanese pitchers
Has any other team ever given as many Japanese pitchers as many chances as the Mets have with as little payoff as they've gotten? The only one I can recall with even middling success was Masato Yoshii. I really can't even keep track of the two they have now, let alone know the difference between them. I was cringing when they were brought into the 20-inning game since that seems to be the surrender sign in games like that. Nothing against Japanese players per se, just the Mets haven't amounted to much.
I do miss Tsuyoshi Shinjo though.
Well, I suppose there are
Well, I suppose there are good and bad from every country but Takahashi and Igarashi both seem to be earning their keep quite nicely - they are a big part of the reason why the Mets have the lowest team ERA in baseball.
agree but
Other teams seem to bring over the stars (Mariners, Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers sometimes) and we wind up with the reclamation projects. So far so good for these two.
Beltran Out Til June
They just said on the Mets game that Carlos Beltran is not making good progress and will probably be out till June. That's bad news for the Mets. I like having Pagan in the outfield but he's no Beltran and we're lacking depth. I thin that Gary Matthews was meant to plug a hole in the roster for a short period of time.
is there any surprise?
Beltrán out til June? Figures. Then he'll be back and hitting .190 and running slow right up til about the All-Star break. See if we're still hanging in by then.
It's A Streak
Not quite a streak at two games, but it's about time we won 2 in a row. Two items of good news. Another great start by Mike Pelfrey. Four hits for Jose Reyes. Let's see if Ollie can turn in another impressive performance tomorrow night.
The Mets Win A Series!
Wow, this is a big deal. It's the first series win of the season. Johan had a shaky outing but was able to get the outs when needed. K-Rod pitched 2 innings for the save. David Wright even got into the act with an RBI. How about 3 hits for Ike Davis? Jason Bay is still in a horrific slump though. It was only the Cubs but I'll take 3 of 4 anytime.
