A Loss Is A Loss

Oliver Perez pitched great tonight. Then with 1 out in the 7th Jerry Manuel decided to pull Perez because a runner was at 2nd. I think Ollie had something left. In any case, a couple of batters later the score was 4-1 on the downside. The Mets scored a couple in the 9th. Reyes circa 2007 would have beat the play to first that ended up scoring a run but also recording the second out of the 9th inning. Too little too late.

20-20

Odd that after a 20-inning win, longest in Mets' 49-year history, no one has a comment.  I was busy working on getting a computer virus gone with mixed results, watching the game on my BlackBerry on mets.com (just the GameDay) and maybe you're all exhausted from watching/listening.

Amusing thing is that today I was listening to Mike Francesa's FAN podcasts at work and he was talking to Tim McCarver, who was about to go to the park to watch the marathon, and Tim said he didn't think games were too long.  TOO funny.

The 20 Inning Marathon

Almost as odd as the game but not quite. I was following the reactions as things unfolded on Twitter (@iheartmets). I also commented on Facebook. Anyway, I thought the game was really a disaster for the Mets for a lot of reasons. Here's a few.

  • Jason Bay went 0 for 7 and his average is .222. (Jeff Francoeur also went 0 for 7 but he's been very hot at the plate.)
  • The Mets managed to scratch out only 2 runs against Cardinals position players who pitched 3 innings.
  • Johan Santana pitched a great game and didn't win.
  • K-Rod blew the save.
  • Mike Pelfrey got the save but he's a starter and should never have to come in for relief pitching.

In short, the Mets won in the most damaging fashion possible, tiring their players and burning through their pitching staff. Sure, the Cards went through the same thing, and they hit just as poorly. But they didn't need the win like the Mets needed this win. It's a sad statement that the Mets needed a win that bad so early in the season.

One last thought. If not for Mike Pelfrey and Jeff Francoeur the Mets are probably 1-10. Seriously. Pelfrey has 2 wins and a save and Francoeur is the only regular hitting above .300.

Okay, one more thought. The Mets pitching was great. Have to give them credits. But again that's a lot of innings burned to win just 1 game.
