Offers To Bay And Bengie

So the word is that the Mets have made offers to Jason Bay and Bengie Molina. I like the offer to Jason Bay. He had big numbers in 2009 with 36 homers and 119 RBI. The year before he hit 31 homers with 101 RBI. And he's only 31. He fits the Mets need for power and the need for a left fielder. Molina I could take or leave. He would probably give us a better season than Brian Schneider but then again I'm not ready to give up on Omir Santos as a possible starter. then again perhaps Omir would benefit from Bengie's presence.
As far as I'm concerned I will be very (and I mean VERY) disappointed if the Mets do not get A) a slugger and B) a solid starting pitcher. There have been rumors that the Mets have shopped John Maine for an outfielder and I have to say that trading Maine would be a big mistake. Yes, he's had surgery but he's young and has a lot of talent. Trading him would be giving up. I would rather have the Mets spend extra $$$ and get the player just for the money. And if Omar could deliver a top starter like Roy Halladay (that would be a great Christmas present!) or even a proven rotation guy like John Lackey I like the rotation of Johan Santana, #2 starter, John Maine, Mike Pelfrey and Oliver Perez.
Finally, the word is that Jeff Francoeur is progressing nicely after his surgery and is "on track" for spring training. Perhaps that's PR gobbledegook because I've seen reports that the surgery had complications. But the linked story said he'll start swinging a bat in January. Recoveries notwithstanding, if Omar doesn't bring home a couple of high quality players in the free agent market I think Mets fans will be sick of him and generally bummed out going into spring training. I really hope that isn't the case.

Omar Better Get Moving
At this rate Mets fans will be getting coal for Christmas. How's that? Well, two very key players in the offseason market, pitchers John Lackey and Roy Halladay will soon be off the market. Reports are saying that Halladay could go to the Phillies (Oh no!) in a three team trade deal. And John Lackey is supposedly talking with the Red Sox. We need a starting pitcher! These are the best two on the market. If the Mets don't land one of them then they MUST get two big bats. I'm hoping these other deals fall apart and the Mets can get back into the mix.
A Lump Of Coal
It's the news we've all been waiting for folks. Boston got Lackey. The Phillies got Halladay. And Mets fans? We get Elmer Dessens (38 yrs. old, 48-62, 4.53 ERA) and Clint Everts, a reliever and veteran of seven minor league seasons. I know you're ecstatic.
Mets Sign Righties Everts, Dessens
Mets sign Bay
The Mets have signed Jason Bay to a four-year, $66 million deal. This definitely helps fill in that need for power that we had, though a starting pitcher we still need. I'm just not sold on Oliver Perez anymore.
