Every day I think we can't have a lower point in the season and then David Wright gets beaned by Matt Cain. Wright has been diagnosed with a concussion and is out indefinitely. Remember that a concusion cost Ryan Church a good portion of the 2008 season. I'm steaming mad and at the same time crushed. Johan Santana did the right thing by retaliating. You cannot let that kind of a play go unanswered. What really needs to happen involves Matt Cain though. He will step up to the plate against the Mets again, if not this season then next. Whoever is pitching during that game cannot forget what happened to David Wright.

Santana did the right thing but...
I think that should be the end of it. Cain was clearly shattered by what happened. The words out that Wright doesn't like pitches that are up and in. I think that's what Cain was trying to do and this particular pitch just got away from him. He said as much on the FAN after the game and I believe him. I think further retaliation will just drag this out and as terrible as this thing is, I would just like to see a healthy David Wright come back after his DL stint and see these guys win some games.
Intent vs. Result
It's easy for Matt Cain to say he didn't intend to hit Wright on the helmet. Let's say he didn't intend to hit Wright. So what did he intend to do? Let's say Cain intended to throw a 90 plus mile per hour fastball within a few inches of Wright's chin. That's a pretty dangerous thing to do. And if you're going to try that you better have perfect control. Cain did intend to at the very least brush Wright back which means that the pitch wasn't about getting him out, but rather he wanted to send a message of some sort. I think Cain has to take responsibility for those actions.
David Wright is the most valuable player that the Mets have in their lineup. Anyone who throws at him should know that their reward will be a stint in the dirt around home plate.
I disagree
As nice as it would be to see the Mets go out on some sort of streak and generate some excitement, I don't think it'd be a very good idea to bring David Wright back this season. Short of us going on a perfect streak from now till the start of September (the earliest that Wright will be back), we're currently not in any serious contention for a playoff spot. Rushing a player back for the sake of getting back will only make things worse, and we're counting on David for decades to come. I mean, look what happened to Ryan Church. He had a monster of a start last season, got a concussion, got rushed back, aggrevated the injury, simply was not the same since and eventually got traded to Atlanta for a younger player. I hink it's not worth risking it with David just for him to play the last 20 or so games of the season.
I think the Mets should focus on straight evaluation of players from now on, namely the rookies and any injured players returning to determine who should get another go at it next year. Also, it wouldn't hurt to try to shut some fans up about all this fire Omar nonsense and sticking with their GM (who's done nothing short of an amazing job setting up a highly-talented roster). It's not his fault players get injured and it's not his job to treat them (or rather, not treat them).
Hey giantsfan7791
Completely agree with you regarding the handling of Wright's concussion after the Church debacle. The point of my post was not rushing Wright back into the lineup but just stating WHEN he came back that they should focus on winning and not on retribution/retaliation. If it helps us next season, I'd be happy to see Wright, Beltran and Reyes all shut down for the rest of the year but listening to Manuel, he seems to think it would be beneficial for these guys to get some AB's in before the end of the year for confidence and all that. I really have to disagree. I just want a healthy team for 2010 after this awful season.
Wright's 2009
I've been out of the area and offline mostly for a week and a half or so, actually in David Wright's hometown area in No. VA, just starting to get caught up here. I was aware of the beaning but did anything precipitate it? I haven't heard anything there so I'm assuming not and giving Cain the benefit of the doubt. It's not as if Wright has burned him or anyone else lately or the Mets need to be retaliated against. They might get a pick-me-up bouquet from the rest of the league but that's about it.
By the way, have you seen Wright's stats lately compared to previous years? OK, forget whatever Wright does or doesn't do from now through the end of next month, but add a third or so to the stats here to see where he was headed...frightening:
