The Parnell Era

Has the Bobby Parnell era begun? The New York Post reports:

"Bobby Parnell served notice last night that there might be at least one good reason to watch this floundering bunch over the season's final seven weeks: Parnell himself."

Parnell's Gem Offers Glimmer of Hope for Mets

I'm not one to go ga-ga over a single good start by a guy who proved to be a shaky reliever and got rocked in his first start just a week ago. But hey, when the team is down any ray of light looks a bit more promising than it might be. It would be great if Bobby Parnell could really handle starting pitcher duties in a manner similar to his performance last night.

So if Bobby Parnell can indeed start the 2010 Mets pitching rotation could look like this.

  1. Johan Santana
  2. John Maine
  3. Mike Pelfrey
  4. Olver Perez
  5. Bobby Parnell

That's a pretty good looking starting five. A lot of assumptions get fed into that list. John Maine has to be healthy. Mike Pelfrey needs to have his confidence back. Oliver Perez needs to be a little less like the wild Oliver Perez. And then there's Parnell.

There's still a month and a half left in the season so we should get a chance to have a couple of more looks at Bobby Parnell as a starter. At the very least its a good reason to keep an eye on the team even though they're just about out of it at this point.

Niese over Parnell

Don't forget about John Niese! Niese is an actual SP, not a converted one, has great stuff, lots of potential, and was battling for a rotation spot this spring already. With Wagner and Putz up in the air and Parnell throwing as hard as he does, I think we should let Parnell stay in the bullpen, which he has had much success in, and hand the fith starter role over to Niese. I also suggest we keep Nelson Figueroa around in the minors because he has been decent and can provide a useful spot start every now and then should injuries pop up (which they always do).

2009 Pitching Staff:

1. Santana
2. Maine
3. Pelfrey
4. Perez
5. Niese

LRP- Livan
MRP- Wagner
MRP- Parnell
MRP- Feliciano
MRP- Green
SU- Putz
CP- K-Rod

im confident with that. it would be sweet if we could land a big SP in the offseason, but i'd prefer to focus on the lineup in trades/free agency, which is a bigger concern.
