Mets - Rockies Series Discussion

vs.
Rockies vs. Mets | July 27th - July 30th, 2009

Tatis!
What is it with Fernando Tatis and grand slams? One of the most amusing anecdotes that away TV broadcasters always love to bring up is that Fernando Tatis is the only player in history to hit 2 grand slams in the same inning, and also that he did it vs. the same pitcher (Chan Ho Park). This year the Mets have hit 3 grand slams, and he is responsible for 2 of them. And tonight he did it on an 0-2 count on a very low pitch, with 1 out and a tie game in the 8th inning! what a risk it was swinging at that pitch in such a tense situation. In less than 150 AB's this year, Tatis has hit into 13 double plays already and that looked to be taylor made. If he didnt have such an uppercut he wouldnt have been able to golf that one out and the mets woulda been tied heading into the 9th.
Overall a nice win by the Mets and an okay stepping stone for Olliver Perez as he tries to regain his 06-07 form.
PS- Jeff Francouer is now officially a Mets regular. Get used to the guy. He's energetic, superb defensively, classy, and apparently a pretty good hitter. In about 80 games with the braves he was hitting .250 with 5 homers and 36 rbi's. in the 13 games he's been with the mets he's hit .330ish with 3 homers and 15 rbis. and he's 25! welcome to the club Jeff.
Francoeur
I get the WFAN interviews in my podcasts every night, listen to them on the way to work, and I'm interested that Francoeur seems to be being interviewed every night postgame whether he particularly did anything or not. Same as Wright does, but I get the feeling Wright was getting tired of having to come up with something after every lackluster performance.
Good Win
In a season like this I'm always glad to see the Mets pull one out in "grand" fashion in front of the fans at Citi Field. Too bad I wasn't there :(
Francouer has looked good with the bat so far. Sometimes a change of scenery makes a lot of difference. I hope he keeps it up. Ollie was Ollie which is disappointing given the expectations at the beginning of the season.
The Mets can give us all some hope if they can win this series and gain some ground on the Rockies, who happen to be in the wild card lead. I'm hopeful that the team can find a way to keep rolling and make the season a more interesting one for us fans.
Four Straight Wins
How bad were June and July? It's been about two months since the Mets last won four games in a row. Since Colorado is in the wild card lead it also means we've gone from 7.5 out to 5.5 out in the last two games. There's still a lot of teams to jump but it would be nice to have any kind of a race given the state of the team this season.
optimism?
I don't know, I don't want to get suckered into too much optimism, but what else have I got here? 4 in a row but of course Philadelphia does nothing but win now, so do they have a slide in them at all this year? How did they lose all those home games anyway? If we can collapse, so can they. Hamels hasn't done much, Lidge has been human and Moyer is 46. Anything can happen.
Phils Just Got Lee
The Phillies just traded for SP Cliff Lee, who won the AL Cy Young last year, so now its REALLY not looking good for us winning the division.
Still, I'm very happy with a wildcard playoff spot with all this club has been through. if we could pull off a sweep of this series and pull within 4.5 or 3.5 games out it would be huge, especially since reyes and wagner and sheffeild are scheduled to return next week.
why
Why was there this urgent need for Philadelphia to get someone, anyone? They're on cruise control as is.
rainout forces dh
Game rained out tonight, so doubleheader tomorrow. I hate seeing a DH come along when the team's finally doing well again since something like 80% of DHs result in a split i.e. a guarantee snap of whatever winning streak we've got or will have by game 2.
Worse though is that DHs used to be a great way to get more bang for your buck. A chance to see two games for the price of one, whether it was the result of a rainout or scheduled. Yes, kids, they used to schedule DHs...and I went to them when I probably wouldn't have gone to either individual game. Tomorrow's DH? Day/night of course. It bugs me that the teams refuse to let the fans ever just get a bonus, somethiing for nothing and the goodwill that that buys. Because the team has all the power, it has to extract money out of every opportunity just because it can. I'm surprised the toilets aren't pay toilets (I haven't been to Citi yet to verify this). DHs also used to be a good chance for backups to get a much needed start (anyone for Ron Hodges catching game 2? Bruce Boisclair in LF??). Of course we've had nothing but backups lately so it's a moot point, but I think the regulars would be more inclined to play an entire day/night dh.
ALERT THE MEDIA!!!
Tim Redding pitched a scoreless inning!
I missed it as I do most games, but I'm pleased to see a crisp 7-0 win in game 1. We'll see if they can buck the odds and pull off a sweep.
nope
Nothing like a dh to kill a winning streak.
Nothings Free Anymore
Fat chance getting to see a free baseball game in this day and age. We have a payroll of over 140 million and much more than goes into funding the stadium and advertisements and the website and electricity and staff salaries and all the various branches of the mets. each home game is an 81st of that total income, and teams need as much moolah as they can get. If I were Wilpon I'd charge for both games too, because i could use that money to go help my team in free agency or trades!
doubt it
Actually, goodwill has value in and of itself. In accounting it's a depreciable value. You give something away and get something in return. But that's neither here nor there.
I suspect that actual stadium attendance is an ever-declining percentage of a team's revenues. Why else would the Mets have decreased stadium capacity? We're not playing in the L.A. Coliseum. I think more of a team's revenue comes from broadcast rights, internet rights as they find more and more ways to sell the game without fans coming to it, merchandise rights, stadium naming rights, etc.
