More Of The Same

I think that a win last night would've made all of us feel just a little better about the 2nd half of the season. Unfortunately we got more of the same from the team. The pitching wasn't very good. The hitting wasn't very good. We had that one 3 run rally where Derek Lowe was on the ropes then nothing more. It's very frustrating. To make matters worse the New York Post has reported that Omar Minaya hasn't even made a call about Matt Holliday. http://www.nypost.com/seven/07162009/sports/mets/holliday_slumber_shows_...

Perhaps Omar has decided that the season is not salvageable and he doesn't want to make a mid-season deal out of desperation. Perhaps the Wilpons are pinched to the bone by their losses to Bernie Madoff and can't afford to up the payroll. I don't know for sure. I do know that it doesn't look good for the rest of the season.

My heart wants to stay hopeful, but

my mind says "get real". We're screwed. I came home today to find the Mets down 10-0 to a division rival, the phillies leading, and Sheffeild out with injury. Tonight we will fall to 8.5 games out, nearly double digits, and in 4th place, 5 games below .500. In addition to Sheffield, we still have Beltran, Reyes, Maine, Delgado, Wagner and Putz out with injury and none are expected to return for 3 weeks minimum. there are only 9 weeks left in the season. Pack up, tip our hats to the Phillies, and hire the best medical staff money can buy for next season. I can't help but feel that for the second straight season fate has jipped the Mets out of a playoff spot, and I hope we're luckier next year. There is not a Mets fan alive who believes the Mets will come back from this defecit, and the players are no exception. Yes, it's still possible, miracles happen and this team is so unpredictable I wouldn't count us out, but we've never had less hope than we do now.

Nats

I've been in DC and northern VA for the week and went to my first game at Nationals Park against the Cubs.  A few thoughts on that.  It was oddly familiar watching the Nats when they were down 3-1 just knowing there was no chance of putting together a few hits and scoring.  Their only run came on a bases loaded walk.

It's nice having the stadium not named after a corporation (maybe none wanted the association? GEICO seems to have the biggest presence if any).  Their motto now is "Get Your Red On," which is an odd choice given that there's already Cincinnati & Boston.  WAY MORE Cubs fans where I was sitting than Nats--they're just about as unsufferable as Yankees fans.  At least the Yankees have won something to be obnoxious about (though not recently).  Wow, for a new stadium, pretty bland and uninteresting.  Nice statue of Walter Johnson though.

Mets?  Glad I couldn't see the out-of-town scoreboard from where I was.

the season is done

I think the season is over now. The Phillies just keep on winning and the way he mets are falling both as a team and with injuries its over.

Sheffield hurt himself yesterday he will miss atleast one game but i have a feeling it might be more.

What would you like the mets to do. Make some trades by deadline to get a team ready for next year or just sit out and wait?

no idea

Whatever will contribute to getting some dependable, sturdy starting pitchers and hitters who can drive in a run or start a rally every couple days.

Santana Does It Again

Johan Santana may be the only thing that Mets fans can get excited about in the second half of the season. He usually finishes strong and he certainly got off to a good start yesterday with his 7 shutout innings against the Braves. Johan just might have a shot at a 20 win season if he can get decent offensive support.
