Gary Sheffield's three-run homer had to go to a replay tonight because a fan reached out and touched the ball on the way out and the ball came back into the field of play. The Mets have done well on these replays so far but it's only a matter of time before we get screwed. The Fenway shot by Omir Santos was an understandable replay candidate since the wall is so high there. But at Citi Field there seem to be too many spots, foul territory included, where fans can interfere with fly balls. The Mets need to do something to prevent fans from getting in the way of plays. Ask the Chicago Cubs how important that can be.

Impressive performances from two of the oldest guys on the Mets tonight. First off, Livan Hernandez tossed the Mets first complete game of the 2009 season, throwing 127 pitches in the process. Second, Gary Sheffield provided much needed insurance that probably made the complete game possible by hitting a laser beam over the left field fence in the 7th inning. The pitch Sheffield hit was around his shoe tops. The guys in the booth we're pretty shocked that he got it out.
The other good news is that the 2009 Mets are trending a couple of games better than the 2008 team right now. Let's hope that this crazy Mets lineup can continue posting more Ws than Ls til we get some key players back in the starting lineup.
I, along with many other Met fans, slammed the Mets for signing Gary Sheffield in the offseason. The Mets would be in an even worse spot than they are now as far as depth goes. He has filled the clean-up spot very nicely and has actually played a decent right and left field. He's been a very nice surprise and hopefully he can keep it up.
Hey, look at Sheffield with the 2-run double giving Johan some early runs! I get the FAN's Mets intereview podcasts every night, listen to them on the drive in to work the next day, was amused to hear that Manuel's been calling Sheff "Pops" in the clubhouse.....

We're back on top thanks to the win last night. Don't know how long it will last. I'd love to think that the Mets are going to start pulling away but I don't believe it's going to happen. We've got too many injuries right now to run away with it. Maybe I'm wrong. I hope I am. Either way I'll feel a lot better when we have at least Reyes and Beltran healthy again.
As far as Sheffield is concerened. I was wrong on him too. He is having a positive impact and we're better off having him on the team. Who knows how long the love affair will last. Would be a nice way for Sheffield to finish his career, with a solid season and playoff action. I've heard from the guys in the booth (Gary, Keith and Ron) that Sheffield has been a total gentleman in the lockerroom too. Perhaps a little age has blessed Mr. Sheffield with patience and wisdom too.
Well, with the injuries, I tend to agree that it's going to be tough to pull away, or even keep pace. I was surprised we got up to 2½ gms. up or so last week. Look at the schedule tonight and I can't believe Philadelphia's playing Washington again. Jeez, don't they play anyone else? Here we go again, where Washington hangs tantalizingly close in the game and then gives up just enough at the end to get swept. I just hope they can take one game.
Well, a quick glance of their schedule shows that after this series Philadelphia only has 6 more with Washington, all first half of September, so maybe they can start getting some competition.

I like it
Nice chart, helps keep things in perspective. Have to try to check the standings, see where we were with the Phillies last year at this point.
Two minutes later....
That was surprisingly easy with the ESPN standings page. Check it out....a year ago we were sitting at 24-26 and 5½ behind Florida of all teams:

I was dead wrong

Nationals and steroids?

Yikes, allegations of the Nationals using steroids. And with a .289 winning percentage? Where would they be otherwise?

Dunn
And Adam Dunn taketh away,
looking good for...
...a return to 1st place if we hang on with this lead. Thanks, Marlins.
