According to the New York Post things don't look good for Carlos Delgado. At best it sounds like a long stint on the DL. At worst he could be out for the season.
"Omar Minaya said team doctors have determined that Delgado has an impingement in his right hip, a small bone spur in the hip, and a partial tear of an unspecified area of the hip, most likely the labrum, which was the area of the hip the Yankees' Alex Rodriguez tore."
It sounds like we'll have to wait a few days to find out what's going to happen as Minaya goes on to say the following.
"Delgado is receiving unspecified therapy from the club, and Minaya said he wants to see how Delgado responds over the next three days before making a call on the DL."
When I saw Delgado slide into third that day i thought to myself as it happened that he came down really hard, but he popped right up and was safe and even played the next game, so i thought nothing of it. apparently this is far worse than previously thought however. this would be a terrible blow to the mets, i feel he is our 4th best hitter and i like fernando tatis as a bench player or a pinch hitter, but i dont trust him with an everyday 1Bmen role. a 15 day DL stint for Carlos is fine by me so long as its settled. if he misses a month, we can deal. if he goes on the 60 day DL, we are in big trouble, and if he's out for the season it would be absolutely tragic. lets cross our fingers nothing real bad comes of this.
I hate when we have a road trip out west because the games dont start until 10:15! i have to stay up until 1 AM if i wanna watch a game! i watched the ESPN recap of last night and it was another solid win. Maine let up just 2 runs in a solid outing, and with a 4-4 tie heading into the 9th our bats came through in the clutch again for a 3 ruin burst and we won 7-4. tonight we have one of the best pitchers in the game vs. our worst SP, so we'll really have our work cut out for us.

Tim Lincecum is the top pitcher in San Francisco but the Mets have gotten to him before and we'll have some of the same players in the lineup who were part of that success. The Giants obviously have the best of the starting pitching matchup so I hope that Livan holds up and gives the Mets a chance to get to Lincecum.
We could beat Lincecum. well, technically he didn't get the loss, but we did get 5 ER on him in 6 innings which by his standards is definetly beating him. he threw 114 pitches and we hit him around a bit. Overall, a very impressive win. Livan struggled early but then settled in, and we overcame a 5-1 early defecit (3 of which came from a bad call by the third basemen which led to 2 more 2 out rbi singles) as well as a depleted roster with delgado, reyes, and schnieder all hurt to take the lead in the 9th inning for the 2nd straight game. sheffield, wright, and tatis all had good games and sheffields defense is proving to be better than expected. in the event delgado misses substantial time, moving tatis to first and putting cycling sheffield in with the corner OF's doesn't sound to bad to me. tommorow johan goes up against randy johnson, so hopefulyl we can get him some run support and defense this time and take 3 straight to start out our road trip.

These past two wins have really upped my spirits about the team because they involved significant comebacks that were fueled by clutch hitting. David Wright really carried the team in last night's game. The three-run double to tie the game at 6 was huge. This proves that the Mets have the goods to win anytime, anywhere. Now they just need to have some more consistency.
I am a bit worried about injuries right now. We're lucky to get these wins with Jose Reyes and Carlos Delgado out of the lineup. Delgado's return is questionable but we really need Reyes back because he's the catalyst and it seemed as though he was getting hot again. I'm thinking that Omar Minaya might need to look to the trade market to find a strong replacement for Delgado is he's out for an extended period. Jeremy Reed doesn't have Delgado's punch. And if you move Daniel Murphy to 1st base then we're probably looking at having to play Sheffield in left field every day. I'd rather look for a younger power hitting outfielder than have to rely on Gary Sheffield's suspect glove and bat on a daily basis. Sheffield has been able to get on base via many walks and scored three runs in the game last night. So he's done pretty well but I don't think he can do it on a daily basis anymore.
We are playing some very good baseball right now. Even though Johan pitched "poorly" (he only let up 4 ER and 1 or 2 were a result of some questionable defense) our bats exploded and gave him some run support for once. In our past 3 games, without Delgado or Reyes in the lineup, in a pitcher friendly park, we have scored a combined 25 runs. These past 2 weeks we have gotten respectable starting pitching even with olly out, solid bullpen work, solid defense, and great offensive production. We are performing on all cyllinders, and the exciting part is we're still not even playing as well as we can be and our roster is still not at full strength. We are a game and a 2-1.5 games up in the division depending on the nightcap of the Phillies doubleheader tonight and I couldn't be much happier with how we're playing.

I would say that at least three of the runs Johan gave up today were due to bad defense. There was the Castillo bad throw to first. David Wright booted a ball right to him that went for two bases. Alex Cora dropped a pop fly that should have been Gary Sheffield's ball all the way. And there was a similar play where Beltran got called off by Castillo and a pop up dropped in. Really shoddy defense (once again) behind Johan so the Mets are really lucky to have won this game.
The real bright spots were the offense and the bullpen. Luckily the guys who gave up runs on defense gave back on offense. Cora, Beltran, Sheffield and Wright were all on top of it at the plate today. Beltran (.379) and Wright (.350) are scary right now. I hope they keep it up. Sheffield must have ate his Wheaties because he got three hits.
Errors aside, today was not Johan Santana's best day. He left some pitches hanging out there and paid for it. That's okay. He deserves a few Ws for his many previously unsupported gems. With K-Rod unavailable it was absolutely huge that Bobby Parnell and JJ Putz (who still makes me nervous) teamed up for a scoreless 8th and 9th innings.
A week ago I would've though three straight in San Fran without Reyes and Delgado could never happened. I think the Giants are a very average team but we're beating them in their own house which shows how much talent the Mets have right now.

The game last night was frustrating because we had a couple of great opportunities offensively (bases loaded, no out and bases loaded, one out) and both situations resulted in double plays and no runs scored. I question Jerry Manuel pinch hitting Angel Pagan for Daniel Murphy in the 8th inning with the bases loaded. Yes, the matchup was lefty pitcher vs. righty batter. But Pagan is just coming off injury and hasn't gotten into a groove yet. So I would've let Murphy bat. It was the first game where I thought we were really hurt by not having either Reyes or Delgado in the game.
Pelfrey didn't pitch too bad aside from the boneheaded balks. Even with that he only gave up two runs. I think that the balk issue can be fixed so in general I thought it was a positive game from a pitching perspective.
The L.A. series is going to be tough. We need to bounce back and get a win tonight to keep a hold on 1st place. Let's Go Mets!
