Jeez, I'm getting sick of Mets.com. Every time I log in to see what's going on with a game, I see some bright, chripy headline like, "Mets waste no time striking against Brewers." Great they scored 3 runs right away. Scan over to the right side of the screen and see that they're down 4-3. Don't be a homer at the expense of truth.

I find the constantly autoplaying video on their home page to be annoying as well. Right now the home page is trumpeting Sheffield's 500th homer which tied the game. Unfortunately they failed to convert in that inning with the bases loaded and one out.

The Mets really needed the win tonight. Livan tired early but the pen held on to give the Mets a chance to win yet again. Thankfully they got it done courtesy of Luis Castillo's walk off single. Castillo has really turned it around over the last week. Carlos Beltran owes Castillo because Beltran left 6 runners on base and had the Mets lost he would have been the goat. Reyes had three hits too.
It seemed with all the leads our bullpen blew last year that we would never get to cheer for a walk off win! The last one I can remember is Tatis' GW double last May, and that was 11 months ago! Good game fore the mets, the score is not indicative of how much they outplayed this team by. The Mets got over 15 hits i think and drew lots of walks, and manufacured their runs the old fashioned way wheras the brewers got the bulk of theres on a homer that barely made it out of LF. Our bullpen pitched well (see below***) and both castro and reyes, had confidence building multi-hit games. Hey Rob, remember you said yesterday that for us to win games Reyes would need to improve? Well after tonights 3-hit effort Reyes is hitting .286, and the mets won, so I guess you were right (just a little earlier than you expected haha). Good all around game, and Johan is on the mound tommorow so that makes it even better.
***I don't want to jinx anything, but believe it or not our bullpen has the best ERA in the majors! it is 2.10! What an amazing turnaround from last year! K-rod has been lights out, and putz, green, and parnell have been dependable as well. Even if we slack off a bit and don't finish among the elite bullpens, I think our days of late game trauma and 29 blown saves are behind us. Knock on wood!
This was an important win for the Mets today, in walk-off fashion. I don't care if it's early in the season as we all know the games you lose in April come back to haunt you down the stretch. It's also good to see Sheffield finally hit his 500th and what a perfect time to do it too. You can't be mad with Livan he sailed through the first few innings and then gave up the sac fly and the HR but thats what we expect out of him. With the Marlins playing very good baseball this win kept the Mets within shouting distance. And what's better? Cole Hamels and the Phillies got shelled by the surprising Padres, if only the Yankees lost it would've been a perfect day.

It's amazing how little run support Johan Santana gets from the Mets. They've scored only four runs in Johan's three starts. He got only one run today but pitched great through seven innings. JJ Putz and K-Rod closed it out. Game ended on a strike em out, throw em out double play. This is the kind of bullpen support we were looking for when er picked up JJ and K-Rod in the off-season. The run support issue is a concern though and needs to improve.
I agree that the run support for johan is abysmal, but there is a very good reason for this: the other pitcher is really good too! When our team fails to get something done we like to blame our players, without realizing that the other team playing great could be more of a cause then us playing poorly. As teh number 1 guy in our rotation, Johan will naturally go against every other teams #1 guy as well unless there is an off day or postponed game or something, and in the early stages of the season that is less likely. In his first start Johan pitched against Aaron Harang, his second against Josh Johnson (who was brilliant for 9 innings vs. us but got rocked by the nationals today...sometimes life just aint fair) and today Yovanni Gallardo, who is one of the best pitchers in the game. So all teams' aces have the same problem. Gallardo feels almost as jipped today as johan did after his last start; he pitched superbly but a RP let up a run and so he doesn't get the win despite not letting up a run.
Regardless, we have won 2 in a row and taken the series and will try for the sweep tommorow. Pelfrey has been scratched so minor leaguer Nelson Figueroa will get the start tommorow. He gave us a nice spot start last year under similar conditions and looked great pitching for Mexico in the WBC, so hopefully we can hold the talented brewers offense in check and get more offense going than we did today.

There's a big difference between an average pitcher looking real good (as Gallardo did today) against the Mets and getting beat by a bonifide ace like Santana. If Gallardo feels gipped he's a fool because Santana has been the best pitcher in baseball over the last few years. Gallardo came into this game with a 6.94 ERA and he gave up 7 earned runs in his previous start. The Mets lest 17 on base today and I believe that they could have gotten to Gallardo.
Well yes obviously Gallardo is not an ace on the scale of Johan Santana, but who is? Johan is the best pitcher in the game. Gallardo isn't, but he is top 15 when healthy. His numbers this year so far are misleading, he really is dominant. He matched Johan strikeout for strikeout yesterday and is a top 8 NL starter. He is an ace.
With that said, you are absolutely 100% right about our failure in clutch situations to drive the runner in. Our BARISP is terrible. We seem to be excellent at earning chances to score, but terrible at capitalizing on them, which is all that matters on the scoreboard. Against a good pitcher or not, we need to be better at that, and today's loss is a prime example.
What do you expect from Figueroa's start on sunday? Suppan hasn't pitched that well for the Brewers so far this season so hopefully the Mets can get after him early and get some runs on the board.

Who knows what we'll get? The Mets bats need to be ready to hit, hit and hit some more. I wouldn't be all that surprised if we got a strong six innings from Nelson. He has given us some nice surprises before.
No sign of iheartyankees4ever!! What an embarrassing loss! I gotta hand it to the Yankees for opening their BILLION dollar stadium with such a bang.... or bangs. 14 runs in the 2nd inning?!!?!? You have to really try hard to suck that bad and it's something every Met fan dreams of, the Mets shutting out the Brewers a team that took the Mets playoff spot last year then watching their crosstown rivals get absolutely torched! Go Indians!!
How many times do we have to see bases loaded, 2 men on, etc with less than 2 out and the Mets hitting into double plays or not score a run? This is a disturbing trend over the last several days....

I've been saying since last year that the Mets really need to improve on being able to score with RISP. It was a huge problem last year (which was largely overshadowed by the bullpen) and is now our biggest problem this year as well. If these stats on ESPN's site are accurate, Carlos Delgado is our most clutch hitter this year batting .283 with RISP. After Delgado, our next most clutch hitter is Ryan Church at an abysmal .162. Reyes is swinging .116 with RISP, Wright is at .111, and Beltran at a horrendous .089. Sure, all the other numbers look good, everyone's average is up there, but the team as a whole has been unable to get runners in. The Mets are currently in 8th in batting average and 7th in OBP but they're 17th in runs scored and 21st in slugging percentage.
Here's to praying that our bats will come alive soon.
Yeah the bats really need to wake up soon. The only good thing is that apart from Florida the Brave and Phillies are having a tough time getting wins too. I know they both won today but they havent started the season that well.

The Mets had many opportunities to score additional runs in this game and didn't do it. How is it that both Reyes and Murphy had three hits (team had 12 overall) and the Mets score only two runs? Both Wright and Delgado failed in key situations. I saw some careless first pitch swinging going on. I plan on checking last season's numbers but it seems to me that the Mets like to take it easy on the weekend, particularly the day after a win.
Did you see the fan interference play down the left field line today? A Brewer was called out when Daniel Murphy was prevented from catching a foul fly ball when a fan stuck his glove over the rail and caught the ball. I don't remember that ever happening at Shea.
