Mets - Marlins Series Discussion

Mets vs. Marlins

Mets vs. Florida Marlins | April 10th - 12th, 2009.

Dammit!

That game got my hopes up so much only to bring me crashing down. The mets were down for the firsty half of the game but they found ways to claw back later on, but it seemed that every time we scored they tacked another one on too. We tied it up at 3 and then in the 7th they made it 4-3 on a clutch, 2 out Hanley ramirez single. In the 9th it was still 4-3 with 1 out and nobody on, and it appeared we were done when we actually strung together some clutch hits for once! With 2 outs and 2 on jeremy reed got a clutch rbi single and the mets tied it up. Instead of losing the lead late we were finally the ones who came back from behind, it felt so good! Until the Marlins rallied in the 9th and, once again hit a 2 out rbi single to win the game. What is most frustrating about this loss is that in the 9th inning, in a big game vs. the division leaders, Jerry Manuel opted to use pedro feliciano and darren o'day in the 9th inning instead of krod! We gave krod a huge contract this year so that the mets could know they would have a clutch arm on the mound for our clutch situations to make sure we don't blow games late like we did last year. I don't care that it wasn't a save situation, with RISP and hanley ramirez at the plate i want the ball in K-rod's hands! i only feel that krod would not have let up a walk and 2 hits like our 9th inning duo did and maybe we would have won the game had we used our best relief pitcher in our most important relief situation.

Runners In Scoring Position

The Mets were 1 for 11 with runners in scoring position last night. That's pathetic and has to improve. A lack of clutch hits killed the Mets in 2008 and could certainly kill them in 2009. Remember when the Mets had a runner on third and none out in the ninth versus the Cubs late last season and couldn't put it away? Nothing annoys me more than failure to capitalize on good opportunities like that. Sadly, David Wright was a big culprit. Last night they said his average was .240 with RISP last year. So far this year Luis Castillo has been killing us. He's only batting .100 overall over the first four games.

John Maine

Even though last night was a disappointing loss to those damn Marlins, there was a silver lining. John Maine was solid, 5 innings 2 runs 5 strikeouts, considering he's coming back from surgery and hasn't pitched in almost a year. I think him and Pelfrey will continue to improve. I'm not as optimistic though about Perez I think he's gonna continue to get shelled. That being said, I heard talks of the Mets showing interest in Roy Halladay or Jake Peavy. the Mets could definetly pull off that kind of a trade and what a great trade for the Mets. They would have the best two pitchers in baseball if they got Halladay. Just think about this for a second: 1. Santana 2. Halladay 3. Pelfrey 4. Maine 5. Hernandez. Definetly would be the best staff in baseball. If the oppurtunity arises the Mets should absolutely consider it.

basically

They played well but just badly enough to lose.  Really sucks is that there's a Comcast MLB preview going on now so these are the games I got to view for free in Minnesota.  When does the preview end?  The 12th.  When does Citi open?  13th.  Of course.

Perez

I agree on Perez.  He was as bad as he was in his last spring start.  I have little confidence in him.  Yes, on a given day he can pitch a no-hitter but he's a bottom-half of the rotation pitcher at this point.

Mets Win Game 2

That's more like it, eh? Luis Castillo stepped up after Jerry Manuel urged him to be more aggressive at the plate. And why not? Castillo has the pitcher behind him so he shouldn't be looking to work out walks, especially with runners on base. Livan Hernandez did his job well. The Mets can go a long way if Livan pitches like that often. I also have to recognize Carlos Delgado and Ryan Church. Both of those guys are off to a great start. Delgado is hitting .421 and Church is hitting .526.

It's too bad that Jerry Manuel needed to use K-Rod last night in a non-save situation. Frankie gave up an un-earned run but got the job done. The one positive is that Manuel took the game seriously enough and didn't play around when the Marlins began to threaten. As we know from past years every win is important as you never know what it will mean at the end of the season.

Bad Loss In Finale

How many times will it happen this season? Johan throws a gem of a game and gets beat by his own team. Between the Daniel Murphy error and the team's inability to capitalize on scoring opportunities Johan had no chance. We obviously just need to move forward to the first home series but I can't help but think that the 2009 Mets are picking up where the 2008 Mets left off in being beat by the Marlins.

Same Old Same Old

Johan was a beast and the opposing bats didn't do much of anything, and yet somehow we found a way to lose. Through 4.2 innings, Johan had 10 strikeouts! He finished up pitching 7 innings, 13 k's, 0 Earned Runs, and looked absolutely dominant but yet somehow was saddled with a loss! Last year it was a combination of poor bullpen and poor clutch hitting that did us in for Johans starts, and today it was poor hitting and poor fielding. Josh Johnson is a good young pitcher, but our lineup made him look brilliant. And Murphy gave teh Fish all the runs they needed by dropping a fly ball my 11 year old sister could have caught. That single play in essence cost us the game and teh series against the division leaders! How frustrating!
