Mets Fifth Starter

With Tim Redding shut down it's anyone's guess who will be the fifth starter now.

"The starting pitching depth the Mets sought during the offseason and believed they achieved has taken a hit. Right-handed pitcher Tim Redding, one of the four hurlers competing for the fifth spot in the rotation, has been shut down because of weakness and aching in his throwing shoulder." So now what? Long shot lefty Tom Martin broke a wrist this week. Freddy Garcia has looked horrible. Pedro Martinez isn't signed. Our best bet for the fifth starter slot at this point may be Livan Hernandez. He has pitched pretty well lately and so far has been free from injury.

I am not too concerned w/ the

I am not too concerned w/ the 5th starter spot. Or the 1st starter spot. What I would be concerned about is if we have to start worrying about the 2,3 and 4 starters.

Middle Starters

I think we're pretty good at 2,3,4 with Pelfrey, Maine and Oliver Perez. Maine worries me the most out of those three due to his injury last year. It's true that if the fifth starter is making or breaking the team in 2009 then bigger problems are afoot. If 1 thru 4 pitch pretty well and Putz and K-Rod are solid then well be doing just fine.

Hernandez or Niese

I have to believe the fifth starter will be Johnathon Niese or Livan Hernandez. It's a toss up between those two but like metsman said I'm not too concerned on who gets the job, and I'm sure most met fans aren't. I think the key to the Mets success is Mike Pelfrey in the number 2 role. If Pelfrey can dominate like he did from the middle to the end of last year that will rauise the bar for guys like Maine and Perez who are very close to Pelfrey talent wise. I also wanna see another arm in the bullpen with the release of Duaner Sanchez. I think Bobby Parnell will get the job and I hope he does because he can throw some gas, something the Mets have been missing out of their 6th,7th,and 8th inning relievers the last couple of years.

Niese Sent Down

This piece of news probably means that Livan Hernandez will be the fifth starter for the Mets at the beginning of the season.

Mets Option Niese To Minors

"And though Hernandez is still competing with Garcia to be the fifth starter, Garcia's struggles -- a 16.71 ERA in four spring outings -- have made him a long shot to make the club."
