The New York Post is reporting that although David Wright is a big fan, the Mets will not be pursuing Manny Ramirez to play left field this season.
"I don't have the opportunity to say no because Omar hasn't brought it to me as an option," Wilpon told Bloomberg News. "Omar and the baseball staff aren't interested."
But multiple industry sources disputed that notion, saying it's all semantics on Wilpon's part, because Minaya is working under certain budget constraints and needs to save his pennies for more starting pitching and thus knows it would be fruitless to broach the subject of Ramirez with Wilpon.
So right now it's a he said, he said thing with Wilpon saying it's Omar's decision but Omar can't say yes until Wilpon approves the budget. Oh brother!
A deal for Ramirez could have a huge upside if he puts up Manny-like offensive numbers. If the tantrum throwing, trade demanding Manny shows up it could also be worse than the Mo Vaughn deal.

We're not getting him
if i were GM/owner, i would trust Manny and put up with his eccentricities in exchange for his tremendous production and energy. a lineup of reyes, beltran, wright, delgado, and manny is one of the best in the biz. but i am not gm or owner, and so i respect whoevers decision it is (i suspect it's wilpon, i think omar wants manny) to put our money somewhere else. sheets, perez, abreu, dunn, garland, beimel and hudson are all guys i would target if we can't get manny.
What if...
Wikpon is bluffing? This probably isn't true, but hear me out it makes sense. There is somethign fishy going on in mets world. The mets appeared to be active suitors willing to make a move and fix the holes in the team that has been just below the playoffs for 2 straight years. they got k-rod, got putz, had fixed the bullpen and appeared to be active in teh talks with Lowe until the dodgers withdrew their offer from manny and teixara signed with the yankees. after that, the mets clammed up. Omar Minaya is a smart man. he loves making the big deal and landing the stars, which is how we got beltran, delgado, santana, wagner, and k-rod. it is COMPLETELY out of character for him to not express interest in manny ramirez. so what's up? why haven't we touched manny and why did we let lowe slip through our fingers? if my suspicions are correct, omar and wilpon are geniuses. they are brilliantly playing their cards right and forcing manny to bring his price down so that they can snag him late in the year for a bargain! just like they did for santana! think about it...manny is represented by big money agent scott boras. boras is mainly targetting only the big market teams, so he can get the biggest contract. the yankees are spent out and got their bat in tex, the dodgers repealed their offer, and manny burned his bridges coming out of boston so they won't take him back. where else could he go? the mets are the only huge market team left int he running, and omar knows it. so he might be pretending the mets are focused on pitching, pretending he's not interested, and waiting for teh price to drop to something he can afford. In the meantime, he is completing teh illusion by signing cheapo SP's like redding and garcia. any thoughts?is this possible?
good call
That does make quite alot of sense. I hope Omar is being that smart because Manny would give the mets the edge over the Phillies. But they would still have to find another pitcher i know they have got Redding and Garcia but they would need a better pitcher than those to for atleast the no.4 role.
