Perez Or Bust

Now that the pursuit of Derek Lowe is over it's time to focus on Ollie Perez. Word is that Lowe will get $60 million over 4 years with the Braves.

The New York Post says:

"The Atlanta Braves were closing in on a $60 million, four-year deal with Lowe, a person familiar with the negotiations told the Associated Press. That is way above the last reported offer from the Mets, which was for three years, $36 million."

There's always Randy Wolf. I think I'd rather have Ollie (as nutty and unreliable as he is) back for 2009. How about you?

Ollie or Sheets

I am very cool with having Ollie back, that way our rotation would look exactly the same as last years (except redding in for pedro, i say that's an even swap) and last year our rotation was one of the best in the NL. i really don't care for randy wolf, but i would be okay with signing him AFTER we get ollie or someone else, as an insurance guy or to compete with redding or niese for the 5th sport instead of the 4th. but i also really like ben sheets. i know i know, he is really injury prone, and we have had injury troubles recently, but here me out. last year, he threw over 180 innings (only 20 less than ollie) and got over 150 strikeouts. his ERA was somewhere in the range of 3.00. he has always had a great WHIP and when fully healthy can be nothing less than dominant. plus, since everyone is scared off by his injury prone-ness, he would cost very little, cheaper even than ollie. so since we've been bought out of all the other good pitchers, why not make a move to try and lock up both ollie AND sheets? our rotation would then read santana, sheets, pelfrey, maine, perez, and we'd have redding and niese waiting in reserve. we'd have the best starting pitching in the bigs! worst case scenario is sheets gets hurt again, and we still would have redding or niese to fill his spot. it can't cost more than 20 million a year for both of them combined, and sheets could be a real steal. whaddya say?

Ollie

I don't think we'll get both of them but if we get one it has to be Ollie. I think what we saw in the second half of last year was only the beginning. We also might get him for pretty cheap because there doesn't seem to be that much of a merket for these big name pitchers.

Perez Over Sheets

If it was one or the other I would take Perez. The injuries scare me with Ben Sheets. It sounds like Sheets can be had for a good price. So if we had Perez locked up I would be happy going with Sheets as a fifth starter who could move up in the rotation if he stays healthy.

I agree

i wasn't trying to say "Should we get perez or should we get sheets" i was just tossing both out there for consideration. i would take perez over sheets too because of the injuries. However, i would much rather have a fully healthy ben sheets on the mound than a fully healthy oliver perez. when healthy, sheets realy is the better pitcher. i am fine with either so long as we get one of them!
