Turner

I just saw we're 0-6 in Turner so far this year? Egad. I don't get it, not like it's the Braves of old, are we scared of the uniforms?

Let's go...Mets?

Phillies and Brewers Just Lost

We're tied for first place in the east, and 2 games up on the brewers in the wild card..........

As Gene Wilder said in "Young Frankenstein"...."It's Alive....ALIVE!!!"

LET'S GO METS!

oh yeah

I'm liking the looks of this...Reyes even getting the add-on RBI in the 8th, nice.

I'm a Customs and Border Protection officer and was working tonight, looked up and saw a Phillies cap walking my way. I had to tell the guy he picked the wrong night to come through my line, gave him a hard time for a while....

Good on Ya!

I think that in the future you should make sure that ANYONE wearing a Phillies cap should get a full strip search.....

9-5......keep adding them on....remember our bullpen has been like Jekyll/Hyde this year

LET'S GO METS

feels good, huh?

it's good to be feeling good about our team again, isn't it? we are on a role and then for some reason lose 4 of 5 and everyone's talking choke, and now 3 wins later we're all confident again! but lets not get carried away...we are in first but only by a half game and there are 8 games left. and we have to play the cubs for 4 of them, while the phillies get the marlins and nationals. so don't get too cocky so soon. but it is a great sign that we are a full 2.5 games ahead of our only true competition for a playoff spot, the brewers, and they got absolutely CREAMED by a poor team tonight and that plus their devastating late inning loss to the cubs and their new manager and overall struggles makes it appear they are hitting the same tailspin we did last year. i actually feel sort of bad for them and their fans, because that is no fun and i've always liked the brewers for some reason and this will likely be their last shot for a while because they don't have the money to re-sign sheets or CC in the offseason. but if it helps the mets for them to lose, so be it. we now have teh luxury of knowing that we don't have to rely on anyone else; if we win the next 8 games, we win the division. period. doesn't matter how the phillies do. obviously, winning our last 11 games is a tad ambitious without a closer or 5th starter and a struggling 4th starter in pedro, but there are worse situations to be in. i'm not sure but i think pedro is up again tommorow night, so that is a big game. he has been our worst starter of the season (imagine if we'd known that early season? he was our number 1 before we got johan!) and other than this start he has just one more, so if our bats can really chip in on those 2 days, as they currently are, we won't have any bullets to dodge starting pitching wise. if our lineup can keep giving us 7 runs a game we will be fine, and if it gives us 5 runs per game we should be able to get by with good pitching. any less and we're going to need to combine a solid start with a good bullpen outing, which is frankly not likely. but i am fine with powering through teams to get to the playoffs. that is our only goal right now, the next week. we can worry about the playoffs once we get there.

Feeling Okay

I'm actually just feeling okay right now. This is such a tight race. No room for error. So I'm holding my breath these days, watching the Mets and watching the scoreboard.

I don't even want to see this team make the playoffs....know why

The bullpen is horrendous, the worst I can remember in a very long time. The bats are too bi-polar - one game good, one game they can't add mid-late tack on runs. This team HAS to score a ton of runs to win a game, period.

Playoffs? I don't know.

The Phillies did today what division leaders should be doing when playing mop up games at the end of the season. They won. And so the Mets are 1.5 games down in the division with 7 to play. Milwaukee won so the Mets are still 1.5 games up on them for the wild card.

Forget the schedule for the rest of the season. It doesn't matter who the Mets play. They have to win. These past three series, losing 2 of 3 to the Braves, splitting 4 with the Nats, losing 2 of 3 to the Braves, have shown that this Mets team doesn't have the juice to go too much farther. So if the Mets do eke out a playoff spot it will probably be a result of luck.

The bats have been up and down at times. The starting pitching has dealt with injuries. But the undisputed culprit this season has been the bullpen. I agree with JNGold. The pen is atrocious. Mike Pelfrey pitched well today and we've been wasting starts like this from various pitchers (especially Johan Santana) all season long. Honestly, if the Mets had just a pretty good bullpen we would be 5 games up on the Phillies right now.

Schoeneweis

> “It’s kind of a shocking thing,” said Scott Schoeneweis, who was charged with two runs in one-third of an inning. “It’s unexplainable sometimes. There’s no explanation for it. I just don’t know what to say. We’re not consistently making big pitches at big times. We do it one night, we don’t do it the next night. Make a good pitch and it’s just — there’s really nothing more to say or explain or philosophize about or whatever. We’ve just got to get it done. Somehow.”

Schoeneweis giving up 2 runs in 1/3 of an inning is shocking? I guess, it's usually 3 or 4 runs. Useless, utterly useless. But I'd still rather eke out a playoff spot and take my chances than not. Mind you, if we eke out a playoff spot and then manage to advance or God forbid win the whole thiing, we'll never hear the end of what a lousy team we were, etc. No one said that about the '06 Cardinals, but WE would hear it about the '08 Mets.

9.5 games up, to be exact

"Honestly, if the Mets had just a pretty good bullpen we would be 5 games up on the Phillies right now."--Rob

Better, even. an incredible stat i've mentioned before is that the mets have blown 11 games we led after 8 innings. the phillies haven't blown any. if we hadn't blown any either we would be 9.5 games up right now. we would be fighting with the cubs for best record in the NL, and we'd be winning that race. if games lasted only 8 innings, we would be one of the best teams in the MLB folks. our bullpen has 29 blown saves this year! 29! 29 times we have had the lead when our starting pitching came out but ended up losing the game. tied with the cardinals for most in the MLB. and don't say it's wagner...we would be better with him but he had his fair share of blown saves this year too. bullpen isn't just a huge reason, it is the only reason (along with injuries, that is) that the mets aren't dominating. sure, our bats haven't given us 7 runs every game, but no lineup does. we have very high runs scored compared to the rest of the league. but our bullpen just can't have a 7.29 era over our past 10 games. ironically, the time everything started going wrong was at exactly the 17 game mark. if we miss hte playoffs i will never show my face in public again.
