Mets vs. Braves

Mets vs. Braves | August 19th - 21st, 2008.

good win

our bullpen held it's own and let up no runs, and our bats awoke from their slumber to put up a big inning in a clutch situation to keep our 1.5 game lead over the phillies. clutch bats and lights out bullpen; that has to build our confidence.

Another Good Win

Mike Pelfrey went the distance for us with only 108 pitches, our bats look alive (though not later in the game), and our bullpen didn't stink. Unfortunately, the Phillies won so we remain 1.5 games up. Let's hope Church can be back for the end of the season as Wagner might not be.

Satisfied But Concerned

I love the way the Mets have been getting it done versus the bottom feeders of the National League. Back in June we would have had trouble with games like these. But 8 out of 9 during the most recent stretch shows that we're among the better teams in the league.

We've gotten very strong starting pitching and our outfield shortcomings have been dampened by the performances of Fernando Tatis, Nick Evans and Dan Murphy. The bullpen hasn't been too much of a negative factor during this stretch either.

I'm still left wondering how this holds up when we face the Phillies and Milwaukee when the bullpen is likely to get a greater test. This is really Aaron Heilman's chance to step up and make a case for himself as a bonafide closer. I hope that he's up to the task.

ANOTHER big win

carlos delgado was huge for us last night. i was dissapointed to learn before the game that his average had slipped to .255, but now it's up to .263 again! 5-5 with 3 rbi's on 3 clutch sinlges, including a walk off. what a night for the big man! pedro gave us another strong 7, and our bullpen got the job done. 9 out of 10 now, and what's more is that the nationals picked the right time to snap out of their 12 game losing streak to beat the phils, extending our lead to 2.5 games. that's what i like to see!

admittedly though, the prospect of our bullpen having to hold up come playoff time or near playoff time does give me the shivers with wagner out for the year, most likely. ayala has looked great though, so that should help.

Ayala's Performance

Ayala got helped out with a little bit of luck last night. The call on the final out of the top of the ninth favored the Mets as it looked like the runner beat the throw to the base. I'll take it though. I remember when Carlos Beltran was robbed of a homer by the umps in Atlanta back in April. The Braves helped out a lot too. Their defense is simply horrible.
