I don't have too much hope for a team that can't beat the worst teams in the league. We got swept by the Astros. The bullpen blew another lead today against the awful Pirates. Almost no lead is safe. It really doesn't look good as far as the playoff possibilities are concerned. Every pitcher in the bullpen is weak. What the heck should we do?

umm...
have a pool party?
I say cut our losses with Feliciano, move Heilman to a 6th inning-type role, use Schoewnweiss and Smith in the 8th, bring up some closer from the minor leagues and take our chances on him. There's not much we can do with a depleted farm system right now, we can only hope for Wagner and Church to hurry the hell up. Give them some time to come back and see where we're at in 3 weeks. We should also stop putting Endy in right field and Jerry should start emphasizing the importance of RBIs with RISP.
To be honest, i feel like there's nothing we can really do right now besides wait and hope we're still in it when some players start coming back.
Kunz To Close
Jerry Manuel has his own answer. Eddie Kunz will be the closer against the Nationals.
"I have to use all of my options that I have -- that's what I got to do," Manuel said.
I can't disagree with Manuel's decision. The veterans have repeatedly let us down in the bullpen so it's time to give the rookie a shot.
Putting the bull in bullpen
this offseason, i wouldn't be opposed to firing OUR ENTIRE bullpen. just screw em all! keep smith, sanchez and kunz, then dump heilman, feliciano, and schoenweiss. all three are over 35, all 3 have sucked this year, all three carry no trade value whatsoever, and all three could free up some cap room to go get guys who actually know how to pitch. those three guys, in a nutshell, have been the root of our bullpen problems. if kunz does well, we could even trade wagner to a team who still beleives in him. wagner started off strong but has blown 7 saves this year! if we could get a starting corner OF to replace alou, along with church and beltran in the other OF positions, it would be well worth it and we could just go with kunz in the closer role.
in the meantime, as for this season, manuel has said that once maine comes back from the DL he will probably use him as the closer until wagner returns. i am ok with that, because clearly our starting pitching is not the issue here.
I disagree with a few things
I believe the Mets should continue to use Schoenweiss, i really like his stuff and he keeps having to come in in all the bad situations. Besides, we wouldn't have any lefties besides Wagner. If anything, Feliciano should be the first to go, though i think Manuel will be a little reluctant to get rid of Heilman, which isn't a good thing. If he keeps pitching like this then we have no choice but to let him go too.
As for Wagner, sure he has 7 blown saves but if you ignore those games, he has pitched lights out. I mean, since June 15th, he's only let in 11 hits and 4 walks. If you ignore the two games in Philly and the one game in Houston, those numbers drop to 3 hits and 2 walks with no runs. Most of the time, Wagner pitches like a god. Everyone has a few bad games but Wagner is still one of the best closers in the majors. Wagner's blown saves are by far the least of our worries, if they are worries at all. We still NEED Billy and i don't see anybody who can do what he does.
As for outfielders, i still believe Chavez has the stuff to play every game, as long as he's not in right. The man is a great defensive player in left and center and he can hit in big spots. I say we let him start and see how he develops as a player, he at least deserves the shot. Besides, we'll have Angel Pagan back next year and we really shouldn't make any moves for an outfielder who's only gonna play the remainder of the season.
Ok
wagner i see your point on. he reminds me of oliver perez at times...either great or horrible. only wagner is a lot better than perez and i was just thinking what we could get for him in a trade and salivating that's all. pagan and chavez are both capable of a starting job, and at this rate even tatis would be in the mix. and competition is good! for the meantime, we will just have to make do in the corner OF with our patchwork guys until church comes back and see how it goes from there. frankly, we're only one game back, and there are 7 non-corner OF guys in our lineup. and our starting has been good and our bullpen can't get any worse than it's been, so there's no use crying over spilled milk. lets go get the phillies!
