How's this for drama? The NY Post is reporting that Jose Reyes and Keith Hernandez had some serious words on the charter flight to St. Louis last Sunday night. Evidently some friends of Jose alerted him of comments made by Hernandez during a recent game and Jose wanted to have his say directly with Keith.
According to the NY post story, "Reyes said yesterday he was angry at Hernandez after numerous friends and relatives told him Hernandez accused the Mets of "babying" Reyes during the broadcast of Sunday's 3-1 win over the Yankees New York Yankees at Shea Stadium." The story also says that Reyes and Hernandez, "...were close to exchanging punches until others stepped in."
No wonder the Mets are having trouble winning games. Some players are worried about the announcers when they should be worried about their performance on the field. This drama is ridiculous. Perhaps the issue is even bigger than we know. We know that Willie Randolph had a serious bug up his rear about the performance of the SNY announcers. It seems that SNY is the team's greatest rivalry right now.
My take on this is very simple. The Mets should play baseball. Looking for scapegoats in the play-by-play booth won't endear the fans to the team. If the Mets start winning consistently all of this nonsense won't mean a thing. To quote a phrase I once overheard from an umpire, "Play ball!"
