Pedro Martinez Needs A New Approach

Pedro Martinez The Mets loss to the Yankees last night was a brutal one. After shelling the Yankees 15-6 in the day game at Yankee Stadium I feared this kind of a let down. And what a let down it was. Getting blanked by a washed up, one game fill in starter named Sidney Ponson. The Mets had big chances to score in the first three innings and failed to convert. Same old, same old.

On the pitching end the situation was equally brutal. Pedro Martinez once again failed to finish the fifth inning of a game. He looks like a guy who has the tools and the savvy but without a coherent strategy. Pedro used to be an out pitcher. Now he's a nibbler. Someone call Mulder and Scully because I think either aliens or Bobby Jones have possessed Pedro's body.

To make matters worse Pedro failed to cover first base on a one hopper to second by Johnny Damon. Carlos Delgado made a play for the ball. Castillo snagged it on the edge of the outfield grass and looked to throw out the slow footed Damon but no one was at the base. Pedro patted his chest as if to say, "My bad." His bad indeed as Damon and Derek Jeter (who walked as the next batter) came around to score.

The Pedro issue is just one of many problems that the Mets have in 2008. So many issues to work out and so little time. Each loss is like a knife to the heart for Mets fans because each loss means that we'll be kissing Shea goodbye without even a taste of the playoffs in the final season.

Willie Must Be Laughing

You have to think that Willie Randolph is getting a good laugh at how the Mets have played since he was fired. The team has gone 5-5 which is no better than the results he was delivering as manager. Perhaps it's the players after all.

Carlos Delgado has also proven what a joke he is. The guy knocks in nine runs, then faces pitchers who can read a scouting report and does nothing. Are you listening Omar?

wait...you're MAD at delgado?

come one, lighten up a bit on carlos will you? the guy just hit 9 rbi's and the next day you blast him for not being able to get hits in the following game? it seems like he can't do anything right! how can you possibly be mad at him the day after he turns in a performance like that. maybe he's turning it around. maybe not, but even if not we're no worse off than if he had never had a one game perk in the first place.

you're attitude going into the second game is proof of th struggles this team has had of late and how they have affected the fans. 2 years ago, having won 15-6 against our arch rivals and then having pedro on the mound for the second game would have any mets fan in a good mood about our offense and our team in general, and confident that this momentum could carry over to the second game. now, our line of thinking is that it's too good to be true, since we're bound to lose one for every win, and this must be short lived. that is an unfortunate but evidentally acurate attitude we mets fans are starting to realize we may have to adjust to.

and i agree, pedro really needs to start making some things happen. on a team desperate to get younger and get more energized, an injury prone 36 year old pitcher with an era over 7 is not what the doctor ordered. add pedro to the list of names omar should sell.
