Unbridled enthusiasm is hard to come by for Mets fans these days. Such is the life of the fan of a .500 ballclub. The Mets get a couple of wins and we think, "The magic is back!" Then come the disappointing losses and we think, "Wait til next year."
So Pedro Martinez returned last night and gave us hope that the magic might truly return in the 2008 season. Perhaps this is what we've been waiting for. A healthy Pedro could energize the rest of the squad into performing at the level we know they are capable of performing at. At the very least we hope Oliver Perez will be inspired.
There have been so many disappointments this season. I'll be looking at the next few games to see if this is fools gold or the real thing. The Giants are bad and beatable. So are the Padres. The Mets can and should win four of the next five games. So let's go out there and do it!
I didn't see the game last night due to the late start combined with my early rising for work. Recording the game would be pointless since I have to know what happened first thing. So between highlights and recaps I have the feeling that although Pedro pitched well he didn't dominate. And these are the light hitting Giants. So I'm cautiously optimistic about Pedro's ability to perform at the level we need him to perform at.
Either way, it's good to have Pedro back. I hope the rest of the team responds accordingly.
Let's Go Mets!

Re: Pedro Lifts Spirits If Only For A Night
Hey Rob! Fortunately, over here in Japan, the afore mentioned game with Pedro on the mound started at 1115am local time which was fantastic! Now you know how I feel when the Mets play day games at Shea ;-)(1pm in NY = 2am in Japan, BRUTAL!!)
As you'd expect, Pedro didn't have his best stuff and ended up putting 10 runners aboard but he was effective and I liked what I saw on a tough night to pitch. His fastball was hitting 92-93mph which was great. What I liked about his outing was when the runners got aboard he made the necessary adjustments. Even as his pitch count was getting pretty high, he managed to get out of a no-out, runners at 1st and 3rd jam by pitching smart.
The conditions were reminscent of Candlestick Park with the fans rugged up against the chill wind and trash blowing across the field. Conditions not really conducive for pitching so it was surprising to see Pedro go out and pitch in short sleeves considering he was coming back from an injury. With all that in mind, I think it was a very encouraging start and let's hope he can back it up as the Mets roll into San Diego with their heads up and on a roll.
Lets go Mets!
