Mets - Nationals Series Discussion

Let's see, another classic inability to score two runs off a sub-.500 team that plays us like it's Game 7 all the time.  Another road giveaway.

From the stats, it appears Johan pitched better, but it was obvious he needed to get out of that one inning unscored on and he gave up the 2-out run.  No good.

The Futile Comeback

The futile comeback is the cornerstone of Mets slumps. I'd rather see them get blown out early than tease us by fighting back only to fall short. At least I can get to bed earlier.

another revolting development

A 5-3 lead against Washington, 3 outs needed, bases empty and K-Rod on the mound.  Can he let 3 guys just hit the ball and 3 fielders throw them out?  Nope, gotta load the bases up right away, walks here, hits there and there you go, back to the wall and give up the whole thing.

I remember a game a few months back where the Mets seemed to have Lincecum all but beaten, got him out of the game and then coughed it up.  Well, they got Strasburg out after 5 trailing, took a lead into the 9th and threw that away too.  Disgusting.  And since it's a day of the week ending in "y," Atlanta won.  Drop another game back, what do we care.

Amazin Disgrace

K-Rod made sure to keep himself on pace this year. In 2008 and 2009 he blew 7 saves. Yesterday's debacle was his 4th blown save of the season. He helped put some distance between the Mets and the Braves who are winning in spite of their wretched closer Billy Wagner. K-Rod gets paid too much to be an anchor on the ship that is the 2010 Mets. The Mets had a real nice June beating some good teams. But they have started off July by losing to bad teams and that takes away my optimism for the rest of the season.

Splitsville

The Mets won the final game today with superior offense. The top of the lineup hit well with Jason Bay waking up to drive in four runs. Ike Davis went deep too. David Wright upped his average to .315 with two hits and Angel Pagan had three hits to peek above .300. Is Jerry Manuel really going to sit Angel Pagan when Carlos Beltran returns? He would be nuts to do so.

Bobby Parnell helped to make things interesting in the 9th. In the back of my mind I thought he might be able to be an alternative to K-Rod in the 2nd half. Fat chance. K-Rod had to bail out Parnell for his 20th save.

So it's a split. Definitely not what the Mets should have gotten against a poor team like the Marlins. More home cooking coming up so I'm hopeful that we can improve over the next week and make a run at 1st in the division again.

split

Sure seemed like a hell of a lot of work to split with that lousy a team, eh?  And when we had an 8-0 lead I put my comfort level at maybe 20-25%.

Split

...poor team like the Gnats but point taken.  Speaking of the Marlins, I'm monitoring that on ESPN GameCast and Florida is FINALLY leading Atlanta 3-2 late but they had a chance to blow it open in the 8th.  Bases loaded, 1 out, Hudson still in there and Hanley Ramirez comes up with the bases loaded.  Against ANY Mets pitcher he gets at least a double.  Hudson?  He strikes out and Atlanta escapes with the next out.  Then Ramirez leads off the 9th with an error and Atlanta's got two on.  Grrrrr.  Like I've said, these teams all play the Mets like it's Game 7 and then sleepwalk through an entire series against Atlanta or Philadelphia.  We'll see if we hold at 3 out or actually pick up a game.
