Mets - Nationals Series Discussion

If there's any point to a Mets - Nationals series discussion at this point, that is.  Well, this Lannan must have been impressive.  Like more than half the Nationals probably, I've never heard of him (and I went to Nationals Park last week...), but he must be borderline spectacular to be 7-7 with this team.

The Symbolism of the number 10

10 is the number of games behind we are in the division.

10 is the number of games the Phillies have won in a row, including last nights thrilling 13 inning walk-off homer win.

10 is the number of times we have been shut out this season.

10 is the number of runs the Phillies scored vs. the Cubs last night.

10 is the number of weeks left in the season

2010 is the next chance the Mets have for a playoff spot.

10

10 is the number of more seasons we need to go to pass the Phillies...for most consecutive years without a no-hitter in the NL.

2010

And that assumes there's a plan in place to address what went wrong this year, including and besides injuries.

so it's come to this

We claw back into a game and miraculously score a run against a major league team, tie it up 1-1 and then give the lead right back and double it in the process.  Down 3-1 to Washington in the 6th.  What are the odds of another daring comeback?  Not as good as the odds of now dropping a series to the worst team since the '62 Mets.

Injuries our biggest concern

I don't really thing "what went wrong this year" has to do with anything other than injuries. That was it. Thats what killed us. Our bullpen has been solid. Our surviving SP that aren't backups (Johan and Pelfrey) have been solid for the most part. Our offense has been the biggest problem, but really thats only because 3 of our best 4 hitters are hurt. Defense hasn't been good but other than isolated incidents it has never really been the reason we lost, and having Reyes/Beltran hurt also hurts the D. We were in first place when Delgado went down and were riding a 7 game win streak when Reyes went down. Then we lost Olly, Putz, Maine, Church, and finally Beltran and with each successive injury our team just got worse and worse. We've been without our stars for 2 months now, and those two months are the time frame we went from first place to 10 games out. If we were losing like this before we got hurt I'd be worried, but July has been the month that killed us (we were 1 game out when June ended) and that was long after the injuries. I think this Mets team deserves a fair shot, and we havent gotten it this year. If we enter 2010 with the same players BUT STAY HEALTHY, we will win the division in 2010 I am sure of it. But we haven't stayed healthy since 06.

The Downward Spiral

Thanks for getting this post out. I was on the DL with bad lower back pain at the end of last week and got so behind on everything. The only thing more painful was the Mets performance in this series. The Nats are horrible and we lost 2 of 3 to them. The Mets hole appears to be dug too deep to crawl out of in 2009. Sad to say but I think it's true. Still, there will be plenty to talk about (hopefully a good trade or two) between now and the end of the season.

trades like frency

Yeah but i think the only kind of trades the Mets will do now will be deals like the one that bought Frency to the Mets. Which i don't think is a bad thing as Omar has a thing about signing stars or below average players instead of signing decent team players. I'd love to see Omar go out and get Alex Rios he is young speedy and can hit for average and a nice bit of power.

It would be great if he could find away to trade away Perez lol.

Perez

Ya know, I just bet that if Perez puts together a few not awful starts we might be able to trade him as a rent-a-player, get a prospect or two and unload some of his contract anyway.
