"Mets need to spend more cash to stay relevant" article

Does it seem like a lose-lose situation when it comes to the Mets spending money? If they don't spend enough, they're cheap. If they spend a lot of money, they're attacked as trying to be like the Yankees and/or buying a pennant. They're being big market bullies. If they spend a lot of money and the Yankees still spend $20 million more, they're trying to do it on the cheap and not making the commitment to winning. There's never any accountability for what did you get for the money you spent. MLB is never going to love the Mets because they can never have a $40 million payroll and make the playoffs like Tampa Bay or Minnesota.

Big Spending

You are right. The Mets are between a rock and a hard place. The amount of money spent on free agents shouldn't be the litmus test for determining whether a team has done the right thing. It's the results that count. I'm betting that the Yanks big spending spree doesn't get them a championship in 2009.

We have to remember that titles don't just go to the teams that spend the most money. If that were the case then the Yankees would have won for the last fifteen years.

Omar Minaya and Co. need to balance spending for big name talent with strategic acquisitions of role players and promotions from within the Mets' farm system.
