Omar, Bernazard, the Wilpons, Rubin, and the Mets public relations circus

The Mets tried to get rid of a distraction today by firing Tony Bernazzard, and somehow turned this into a bigger distraction. While at the press conference announcing the firing, Omar Minaya criticized Mets blogger Adam Rubin, who first broke the story of Bernazard's outbreak. the whole story can be found here:

lets get some facts straight.

1. Omar Minaya is a terrible public speaker. I personally think he's a great GM (I know I'm in the minority there but hear me out), but he is always jumbling his words and repeating himself. So when you see him bumbling through his sentences don't think he's making an ass of himself, thats just how he normally talks. He's like porky pig up there, he never speaks understandably.

2. Bernazzard was a close friend of both Minaya and the Wilpons. As a Mets fan with no friendship to Bernazard I'm happy he was fired, but obviously Minaya and the Wilpons were reluctant to fire a friend. As you can see in the above video, Minaya was a little pissed and a little shaken, and I think his emotions got the better of him because he was just forced to fire a comrade.

3. In that anger/frustration/sa dness, Minaya made the mistake of saying the things on the back of his mind which really weren't neccesary to say. I read Rubin's collumns and he's a nice guy and a good reporter, I don't think he would purposely make up some BS to get Bernazard fired to increase his own chances of a job, but its plausible. The Mets were all set to let this go, everyone had dropped it, until 2 weeks later Rubin drops this story which causes a media firestorm and gets Minaya's friend fired.

so obviously, the Mets and Rubin were not on good terms because he had made a big headache for them and had hurt a personal relationship with ownership by getting the guy whose job he wanted fired. Then he asked that question in the conference "What would it take to get a job in baseball?" and I can see why Omar went off on him! If your a GM and a writer who has previously asked you for a job writes a story that gets the holder of that job, who is also your friend, fired, then in the press conference to announce that firing again asks about how to get a job, you would be pissed too and want to go off on the guy. so thats how this all went down, I still like both Rubin and Omar but I can see why Omar would criticize Rubin. hopefully both sides will realize it is in both of their best interests to let this story drop so the Mets don't have yet another distraction.

A Big Distraction

This is not what the Mets need right now. No wonder Omar hasn't pulled off a good trade. He's busy dealing with personnel issues and stoking the flames of a feud with Adam Rubin. I saw the replay of the press conference and it was weird to see Rubin with all the mics in his face as he tried to explain what Omar was referrring to. Who knows what Adam Rubin's future will be on the Mets beat. It's always embarrassing when your employer finds out that you've been looking elsewhere. But now the whole world knows about it.

Just when we start winning...

then this happens!

Anyone else notice Omar literally shaking during the press conference? I think he has a great baseball mind but is a poor public speaker. He was clearly rattled today and at his worst. He looked very upset but no sympathy from this Mets fan after he tried to hang Rubin (whos articles I respect whole heartedly) out to dry in such a tacky way.

just don't care

Maybe it's me, but I really don't care about this story.  I don't think there's even all that much of a story there really.  A VP does something stupid and either gets fired or doesn't.  OK, what do I care?  Doesn't change my life any.

I think of this story made the whole tragedy we should less pay attention to every detail of it.
