New Strategy: Bubblewrap
What the hell is with the Mets and getting injured? Beltran was placed on the DL today with a knee briuse he got 3 weeks ago. Jose Reyes has missed 5 weeks and will be missing at least 3 more because of a hamstring tear that he suffered while rehabbing from a tight calf that turned into a calf strain. Delgado has been out nearly 2 months and will be out for at least 1 more with a hip injury he got while needlessly sliding into 3rd. Maine and Perez have missed significant time, Pagan has missed all but 2 weeks, Schnieder missed a month, Putz will miss 3 months, Wagner will miss 4 months, and there have been dozens of knicks and knacks throught the year. We are missing 3 of our top 4 hitters. You can talk all you want about poor clutch hitting or poor bullpen or whatever it is, but the single largest factor in the Mets' struggles both this year and last year has been injuries.
Im tired of using this excuse, but its a fact. I don't know who to blame, the doctors for misdiagnosing, the physical therapists for not helping them recover well enough, the players for not being careful enough, or the coaches for not enforcing a flexibility regimen. Whatever it is, we need to stop it. Have all the players come to practice 30 minutes early in the offseason for stretching. Make sure every player is limber and loose when they're on the feild. Make more contracts based on "games played", giving players more financial incentive to take care of their personal health and take time out to stretch. Heck, put bubblewrap or extra padding under the jerseys if you have to just make sure that our players stop getting hurt, or we will never make the playoffs!

Must Be Conditioning
I really think that these injuries have to do with lack of conditioning combined with lack of a proper warmup before games. It's one thing when someone hits a wall or gets banged up in a collision. But when players are having problems with pulled or torn muscles then I think conditioning has to be a factor.
In Beltran's case he was probably playing through the pain (Sheffield is too I think) and perhaps he didn't want to jeopardize his season. It's hard for me to know for sure. What I do know is that the Mets are crazy banged up right now. I can't remember a time in recent years when so many Mets regular starters have been on the disabled list.
John Maine
I would put some blame on the players for not reporting their injuries early enough - like Santana playing through an injury last year (which is why there was speculation that he was doing the same this year) - but then you see the situation with John Maine.
John Maine told his trainer that his arm was hurting because he was going through the "dead arm period", so they shut him down. (I agree with this approach.) The folks on SNY got on Maine's case and said Maine should not have said his arm was hurting, because the Mets had to shut him down once he said that. They said he'll learn now for next time not to say anything.
Yesterday, the Mets placed Beltran on the DL. Fans at the game last night got on him because the injury was a "bone bruise". Fans implied that Beltran was being "soft" because a bruise should not force him to the DL.
My feeling is if a player says he is injured, we should sit without judgment. Otherwise, we are going to silence them and set ourselves up for more serious injuries.
Duaner Sanchez Flashback
Remember in 06 when the red hot Duaner Sanchez got in a terrible car crash that ended his season and the next season too?
The Mets had a flashback to that last night, but with a far more important player. While driving to Mets' trainer Rey Sanchez's office for a checkup on his torn hammy tendon, Jose Reyes was rear-ended BY A FIRETRUCK!
He was thankfully unhurt, but still this is laughable! How many exotic injuries can we get!
injuries
I don't get it. it's not like there's a shortage of trainers, conditioners, stretching coaches, you name it, around the team. How does it work with other teams? I've been saying forever that the Phillies never have to deal with a serious injury and that if the Mets had signed IbaƱez, he would've needed a hip replacement by now and been hitting .210. Finally they're getting some of it back. Schadenfreude? You bet!
