Fernando Martinez's Long Awaited Callup

For those of you who don't know who f-mart is, he is the Mets most heralded minor league prospect, and he just got the much anticipated call up to the Major Leagues with Ryan Church going on the DL. When the season started, I thought there was NO WAY he would ever get on the team this year. Beltran, Church, Murphy, Sheffield, Tatis, Reed, Pagan, Evans, and even Marlon Anderson seemed to be ahead of him on the depth chart. but with tatis at SS due to 3 injuries at that position, Murphy at first due to delgado's injury, anderson fired, evans slumping horribly in the minors, church heading on the DL, and sheff in left, the mets only had reed and pagan on the bench, and they decided the time was right to call up Fernando. we have to keep our goals for him realistic, as nearly all young kids struggle a bit when they first get called up, but it's hard not to get excited about this kid. he has been compared by many to Manny Ramirez as a hitter (though without the laziness and showmanship) and has finally been putting together a great year so far. He is just 20 years old and the Mets view him as a part of their long term future, so we should get used to him being around. He is starting in Right Feild tonight, and batting 6th in the lineup behind David Wright, so he should get some RBI opportunities. Anybody who can watch the game tonight should, as we might see some of the "firsts" of f-mart much like we saw all the "firsts" of Citi Feild that we can proudly tell people we witnessed live haha. Ironically, I was acutally rooting for Church to get put on the DL because I want the chance to see this kid, and our lineup is so banged up right now that what's one more injury?

should I be concerned

Should I be concerned about our farm system that I've never heard of our most heralded prospect?  Probably.  Ah well, good luck to him.  Can we PLEASE sweep the Gnats by the way?  Don't just win two and then do an ehhhhhhh the last night, finish them off.

This Is Bad News

To be frank the fact that we're seeing this kid come up means that things are pretty screwed up right now. We're down to a skeleton crew with Castillo and Wright the only opening day starters on the field. Consider the fact that Gary Sheffield is our cleanup hitter. Thanks heavens he's getting it done with a pair of three run homers in the last two games. I'm grateful were in a series against the not good Nats right now but things get tougher very soon and we need guys to get healthy in bunches.

Meanwhile Oliver Perez will be staying in AAA Buffalo for at least on more start. The numbers from his outing tonight don't look so hot.

"His line against Triple-A Lehigh Valley (Phillies): 4 1/3 innings, three hits, one earned run, five strikeouts, five walks, 88 pitches (48 strikes)."

Not Running It Out

I saw that play last night where the kid didn't run out the pop up in front of the plate. Very embarrasing for Martinez and bad for the team as it hurt their chances for a rally. Luckily the play didn't impact the game negatively for the Mets but you don't want to take that chance. Players, whether rookies or vets, always need to run it out!

There's good high quality video of the blunder here. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090528&content_id=5017238&vkey=perspectives&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb
