As are all Mets fans, I am very excited about the coming of one of the best closers in the game in K-rod to anchor down our godawful bullpen, especially with another elite setup man coming in behind him in Putz. That said, I am a little unsure what to think about K-rod's post-save celebrations. Bob Klapisch of MLB.com recently wrote an article about how this will bring the NL East rivalry to a whole nother level, and while that is not what concerns me I am not sure my opinion of his celebratory antics. For those of you who are not familiar with k-rod, he is 26, young, extremely talented, and consistently excellent, and also very eccentric and loves the limelight, much like a Manny Ramirez type of personality. Just after the final pitch of each and every save, he falls to his knees, points to the sky, leans back and lets out a bellowing, guttural yell in triumph. While this often fires up the fans and his teammates, he does not win many friends from opposing fans or players by doing this, and personally I have always disliked his celebration. In teh past I have found it to be just a bit over the top, especially in low-pressure, 2 out nobody on, 5-2 wins over like the Pirates or some crappy team. It's just not needed, and as an opposing team it would sort of irk me. You can bet if Brad Lidge of the Phillies did it it would annoy the hell out of us! It's almost like a taunt, and I have always preferred the more humble style of ballplayer who will pump his fist, cheer a bit, and then hand the ball back to the ump like a professional and go home.
On the other hand, as a Met, he can do whatever he wants after the save so long as he actually gets the save! With the embarrassing bullpen choke jobs we Mets fans have experienced, it seems a bit silly to be complaining about the celebrations of our new, young, exciting, elite closer with our remodeled bullpen. There is so much to be excited about for the upcoming season, and I don't want to be a party pooper by complaining about one of the most exciting parts! And with the 29 saves the Mets assortment of releivers blew last year, we Mets fans may want to fall to the floor and howl with him every time our bullpen actually gets the job done! Not to mention, every time K-rod saves a game vs. the Phillies, I hope he does the longest, most elaborate celebration he can think of, just to piss those Phillie fans and players off! With all the smack talk they have spoken, and all the jibes and arrogant remarks they have sent our way, and with the obnoxious nature of Philly fans in general, I have no guilt whatsoever about sticking it to them in any way possible.
What do you guys think about K-rod celebrations and should he tone it down a bit for the almost meaningless games?

K-Rod Celebrations
K-Rod can celebrate all he wants if he's getting the job done. Especially in the big games (like vs. the Phillies, Braves and Yankees) he needs to get the job done. I don't think that being angry is going to make other teams (or the Mets) better players. They'll just be angry.
Baseball has a great history of relief pitchers and their antics. Remember Turk Wendell with his shark teeth around the neck, slamming the rosin bag into the mound after each pitch? Remember Mitch, wild thing, ... Oh yeah that was a movie. You know what I mean though. I don't mind the fist pumping, the screaming, the going down on the knees so long as K-Rod kicks butt on the mound.
I agree with rob on this one.
I agree with rob on this one. Oh and I have to add another name to the list of cocky closers that I'm sure all met fans hate........John Rocker!
John Rocker
Oh lord I hated that guy. I actually bumped into him once down in New Orleans on New Years Eve. It was when he was still with the Braves. That night he got into some kind of trouble at another bar. He had that one season when he gave the Mets fits but I'm so glad he fizzled out.
